Specifically, it was written after the Second Battle of Ypres, in 1915. It was the first time the Germans used gas as an offensive weapon. The Canadians took the full brunt of the attack.

Here is my Canadian contract 1911 that was at Ypres.

It belonged to a Canadian officer Lt. William Forrest Cooke, he left his civilian job as head of a lumber company to serve in WWI, his second war. He had previously served as a Corporal in the Boer War. By the end of WWI, he had been promoted Lt-Colonel and was awarded the DSO and twice mentioned in dispatches. He was wounded twice.

Just one of many great Canadians we remember.
