Let's build a 1000yrd rifle, opinions and thoughts welcomed!!

i d like to hear about your ruger 77.

thanks a lot.

Not much to tell. It is just an old short action 77. I soldered on a solid bottom to make it a single shot, altered the bolt nose to allow the use of a rimmed case, modified the action to accept a Remington-style trigger and installed a Canjar three-lever, and drilled and tapped two holes in the solid bottom so it uses three bedding screws; the angled front screw and two behind it. The tang is floated. I re-cut the receiver threads, locking lug seats and receiver face. The bolt face was opend to accept the 30/40 Krag and it has three barrels; 30/40, 303B, and the 30/30. The 30/30 uses a different extractor than the other two. The action is bedded into a Lee Six Heavy varmint stock. I have shot the 30/30 a bit and it will do 1/4 frequently enough that it seems promising. Not likely to make the PPC shooter quake in their boots but should work OK. for score. I do these things because it is more fun than just assembling custom parts. Don't know if I'll get a chance to shoot it in a match this year. I'm going to concentrate on silohuette and "F" class for the next couple of years. I may take it to an "F" class match with the 30/40 barrel in place but I have another 30/40 which works well and which may get the nod. In addition, there are the more conventional 308's and 6.5's which also need to be exercised.

If I was in your shoes I would get a remington VLS and put a kreiger or Bartlein barrel on. I would have it chambered in 6.5x47 lapua. I would also have the gunsmith pillar and bed it . These are super accurate , very good barrel life and much better ballistics than a 308. I would then add a jewel trigger and top it off with a Sightron 8-32x56 . The Lapua brass is expensive to begin with but is actually cheaper in the long run as you will get a minimum 20 reloads but more than likely over 30 if you don't press it too hard and anneal.
I have this same rifle but in 6x47 lapua( I don't recommend this calibre for you as the barrel life is substantially less).
This rifle will compete with my full custom 22 lb 6x47 lapua which is saying something.

I'm seriously considering getting a 6.5x47L spun up for my DT. The ballistics are so much better, less powder so cheaper to shoot and barrel life is good. 3500 rounds vs 5000 rounds of 308. The difference seems so worth it, less felt recoil and better trajectory.

I keep thinking the same but since barrels for my rig are almost as expensive as yours, I won't do it until my 308 barrel is toast. It should go 6000 rounds (I'm at 2000 now).

Here is a neat 6.5x47L

11 pounds, Predator single shot action, Jewell trigger, Terminator brake

Its on my long list of items to get. Above a spotter 60, but below a rangefinder and kestrel. Maybe after I get a promotion...

It might just be a British Columbia thing. In the National rulebook, the only restrictions on rifles for PR that I can see are trigger pull, magazine capacity (as per federal law) and that ammunition must match the range template.

Yeah, your right. Its a BC thing, from the 2016 rules. Reminds me I should test my trigger pull weight, I think I have it under 2.2 lbs.

2. Equipment Rules:
2.01 General:
Equipment Rules are the same for both classes:
.
e. Flash Suppressors / Muzzle Brakes - Limited to factory production rifles that are originally
equipped from factory.
(custom breaks strictly forbidden)

What is your take on IOR and some of their most recent offerings?
For the best in LR 308 Tech, see what is happening for FTR rifles used in competition. No issue hitting small targets at 1000yds with the current tech 308.

For a no brainer start, there are used Savage FTR in the EE and that will do what you want out of the box. These rifles are being used at some very high levels of competition so they do work very well.

Reload using quality bullets and enjoy. If you prefer to build, all sorts of ways to go but the big one will be your budget as this can get spicy real fast.

For LR optics, include Sightron into that mix. If you have the pockets, the Tangent Theta is very very impressive.

If you want to build a repeater, no problem BUT there are lots of limitations when running a 308 out of a mag... and here, I would lean you towards other smaller bore options. But if single feeding, plenty of great slugs for the 30cal.

PM or email if you want to discuss further.

Enjoy...
