Lets design ANOTHER chassis for the Norinco Scorpio

If you saw my last thread on this, I designed and machined a wooden stock for the 13" scorpio. I got annoyed by the lower velocity while shooting 180y in 15km/wind and sold it for a small profit. I've now ordered the 20" version and am going to design ANOTHER chassis for these. Until I find a CZ match action, the Norinco will have to be a suitable action to build around! I plan to make this my XMas vacation project. Also strongly tempted to design and build a walnut stock, traditional style a le CZ lux series.

This is the first chassis I made :

And this is where Im at after 1hr in fusion tonight. Chassis will be made out of solid Alu, Walnut grips and a 3D printed buttpad and either a tube or rod based "buffer tube".

It's very much NOT my normal style, but I think I have to embrace that "modern" look if Im to make a metal chassis in 2023. Feel free to drop any design suggestions (pics preferred) on how to make it look or feel nicer, such as the buttstock, grip shape, slot shape and position, etc etc. If there's anyone who owns a EM332 and would like one of these, it would be easier for me to mill a second one at the same time. I will probably make one out of pine again first to ensure all fitment and clearances work first. Of course, the barrel is free floated.

The idea is to put a Diamondback tactical or something obscenely large and expensive on this too. 16x min zoom.

Someone else might chime in but with .22lr I don't think you are going to gain much if any velocity going from a 16 to 20" barrel, maybe slightly lower SD/ES? Can't wait to see the chassis...

It's 13 to 20". There will be around 100fps increase or so - just enough to justify this winter project. I'll probably shorten it to 17" or just past the front irons.

Folding stock perhaps?

Maybe. Doesn't benefit me too much.

I got my son a Scorpio for his birthday, and thought that maybe cutting the butt stock off and adding an AR style buffer tube and butt stock would be an easy way to shorten it for him, but ended up just trimming it by about an inch. I made a new stock out of birch for my rifle, the big brother to the Scorpio, an NS522. It's way better than the original one was, and I've been using it this summer for rimfire PRS shooting. They're surprisingly good rifles with good ammo and a bit of work initially to clean up some rough edges. I'd way rather have one if these than a Savage.

Did you know that the 332X action has easily removable barrels?

If you wanted a donor action to build off, this is the one.... as long as you can find a gunsmith to machine the tenon... which is far less complicated then a CZ

I shot my shorty to 300m with no problems at all... shot very nicely.

Look forward to the updates on your chassis

Great rifles... can be fantastic shooters

FYI, FOC has an interesting Boxing Day sale on right now, with shorty 332X's at a very good price, pretty cheap shipping too.

It seems the consensus is that the 332X's are an improvement from the 332A's in that they have a better bolt knob and included scope rail, but maybe on average a bit less accurate than the 332A's 20" barrel? Or maybe a bit more picky with ammo?

I really do enjoy shooting my 332A, it has a very nice feel to it bone stock. Definitely tempted with the shorty tho.

Merry Xmas to all.

210$ is a great deal. Lot of gun for the money. I will be getting Weaver bases to fit a 50mm optic anyway, and intended to redo the bolt knob. Probably thread the handle and turn/print whatever I like.

I found a 20" on the EE for 200$ with spare mags. It will be here first week January. I picked up some walnut yesterday for the stock and am going to go traditional wood first before I delve into aluminum - few design ideas I just can't quite nail down in a pleasing way.

Yeah I did. I'm also curious if the trigger assembly on the 20" is different then my 13" and that I can get inside to polish it and weaken the spring pull.

What would you suggest for a barrel? IBI for 600$? Something with a match chamber from a 10/22 (~250?)

I have all the machinery and capabilities to do the tenon work myself. Would it be insane to blueprint the action and also clean up the receiver body??

Personally, I wouldn't touch the action at all... except anywhere that needs to be smoothed up for operation. There will be no prefits but I can certainly offer you a barrel blank. I never measured the barrel (which has now gone on to another shooter) but I am sure a 10/22 could make a good base (???)

The 332X trigger housing is different but the methods/operations are the same. The casing is not rivited together... those are just pins that might be a bit swagged. So just knock them out and you can work on the parts.

The QC on the 332Xs was much better vs the 332A... but I would give the nod to the 332As barrels.

If you want an Annie donor to put on a match barrel, the 332X would be my choice for sure... but my 332As shoot so well, I don't see the need nor the expense... and I have already done the fitting of scope base and bolt knob.

eenie meenie... they both work

Great idea, nothing better than custom

might want a larger 'flat' in the mag area for silhouette and free-hand shooters
adjustable pistol grip position would be nice too

some ideas from Wooster stocks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UVkaKFdBcYI

are 5 rnd mags available for the 332 ?

Look what showed up today. Had to clean it for 20 minutes and then started rough design work. Going to inlet this on the cnc and then carve most of it just off instinct. The Scorpio has almost identical proportions to the BRNO

I guess we can say that Jahnjo584 has very nice wood......

But seriously, that will undoubtedly be the nicest stock to go to ANY Norinco product. Very nice grain.

Given how many Scorpio fans there are here, don't be surprised if you find yourself with another income stream!

Happy New Year everyone.

That should look good. I didn't use anything fancy for mine seeing how it was my first try at building a stock, but if I were to do it over I'd go with a decent chunk of wood instead of just the birch I had on hand.

Spent almost 5 hrs on it today after a 5hr grouse hunt. I decided to go all hand tools on this. I run a cnc up to 50hrs a week and have no real desire to hear it run on my one week of vacation.

All the inletting was done with a 1/8,3/8, and 1" chisel. Used a socket with 80gr to smooth out the top two channels. Flattened and established a square flat face with a hand plane. Japenese pull saw for rough cuts.

The magazine release is fully ported. The trigger will be cut after I have the handle done.
