Connaught match is starting next month. I can't go but I got a few civvies from Montreal are going. Anyone getting else looking forward to the event?

Since ammo cost is always an issue, what alternative methods has anyone successfully used improve their shooting? Personally, it's an air rifle.

10.22.... As a matter of fact, I'm opening my own backyard range this weekend to get back into "shape".

Can't make the Connaugt shoot next month either. But will be doing the pistol clinic at OSA and they have a practice weekend I'm planning on hitting as well...

Can't wait to get out there....

I train with a CZ452 Varmint .22LR, I work on position shooting (flexibility) at 50m ranges. I like to shoot at the weeds in the backstop. I work on my standing position after running about 50m up the range road and back. Then I will pick up my bolt rifle from the shooting mat, load a magazine, ready the rifle and proceed to shoot from the standing position at a fig 12 at 50m, all the while huffing and puffing from that 100m dash.

Then I work on my sitting and also my kneeling positions with the .22. Dunno about you guys, but I cannot afford to blast .223 bullets down range, so I just work with the .22LR

For my snap shooting, I used to train (son took the Nintendo 64 console and controller to Queers Univ in Kingston) with my cheapo Nintendo 64, using Goldeneye 007 in the Library - Soldiers keep coming down the stairs, I just 'breathe' and then release the trigger as the red crosshairs center on the chin, just like the fig 12 snap matches (300m Snap especially).

Won some DCRA Gold medals this way back in July 2000 when CFSAC/NSCC ran concurrently.

Now with the CZ452 Varmint, since the pistol grip is old school, all this helps for training towards competition with an M14 or M1 Garand. About 20 years ago I used to shoot indoor .22 matches and practice with a BRNO # 4 Hvy barreled bastard. It was great for practicing my NRA High Power rapid fire matches when I had 2 X 5 rd magazines. I would hit the 60 sec (NRA High Power rules, not Canadian NSCC rules of 35 sec) stopwatch and then time my reload and then still have time to pretend I'm carrying out a wind check (from my 2 sighters) before continuing with the last 5 rounds of the rapid fire.

Now that I'm competing with an M1 Garand in the 24-25 May Service Rifle matches in Connaught I'm back in familiar training territory, the CZ452 Hvy Varmint will surely help the principles of marksmanship (PAST) or (BRASS), whatever acronym you use to shoot tight groups. Find YOUR Style, Grasshoppa!

The cost of ammo has become secondary to the cost of the gas to get there. I suspect a lot of matches will see fewer shooters because of it.

Me....I just hope and spray! ;)

Seriously, the area I work on the most is standing snaps from low ready as it trains the eye and trigger for sight picture, and last year I found that paid off in all positions. I use the AR and a .22LR Remi.

Of course I work on all the positions too, but I concentrate as above.

I found that on the mound at Connaught I didn't care about position stability as much because my sight picture was so tuned in, I just saw the shot.

Your mileage with this method may vary, of course.

You make a valid point. Gas is stupid price right now. Can't imagine it will drop a whole lot over the summer. So, I'll be picking and choosing which matches I can afford to attend.

Plink:

You make a good point about the gas and expenses. It was a lot cheaper to attend a match this time last year. We'll see about May 24-25... Might have to be doing work on the new house.

Peace be to journey

That's what I've been doing. Practicing acquiring a target from the low ready..
and walking 4 miles a day..

What the heck are YOU doing at the beer store???

Well, if you're going once a week anyway you might as well not come back empty handed. I'll take some Keiths.....

That's also part of the training you know... lots and lots of 370ml curls.... :D
