Lets play a game...what did I buy?

... the game is easy, help Curly identify what he bought. I have bought my first mauser, I think and it's a Venezulian contract version in 7mm mauser. The rifle is apx 38" overall and sports a 16 5/8" barrel that appears to be uncut and original. It sports a full wood stock, rear peep sight and sports a 3 digit serial number. That's about it as I cannot find any other information. How about it guys, can someone help a fella out?

Nice, but even a 7mm is going to have a nasty bark out of such a short barrel.

Heavily modified (bubbad), the only thing Mauser left, is the action, which was made on Belgium.
The barrel is not a Mauser barrel either.

How come the barrel has the same markings as the receiver and such?

Venezuelan 24/30 that has been worked over is my guess. I love the shorty 7mm but not the over all appearance (sorry).

Maybe an old modification in Belgium, this might explain as well why the recoil lug was replaced with a wooden dowel.
One thing is for sure, it started it's life as a military rifle (hence the Venezuelan crest), but it was never a military rifle as it is today.

Original 'had' a stepped barrel, its been recontoured. Looks like bubba had fun back in the day.

looks like you are right, it seems the barrel profile has been milled down, hence the added wood in the barrel channel.

I honestly have no idea. Saw it at a little gun store and just thought it would make a great little bush rifle. I didn't want to screw with it until I was sure it was nothing special. I see so many threads where someone bought something, refinished it and ruined it because they didn't know. I didn't want to be that guy. I saw a rifle that was sent to Peru that looked the same, but, I knew the crest was Venezuelan. If it has little or no value then I plan on working it into a nice truck/bush rifle.

Probably around 1930. Anyway its a bush gun now, the damage (as the purists see it) has been done. My only concern would be the recontouring, but other than that you got an interesting rifle.
