Well looks like our camp has decided to pitch in some $$ to purchase some some tracking collars for those of us that raise, feed & train the dogs to prevent us from loosing one of our prized pets during the hunt :)

How about some opinions on products you guys use & what's best unit to buy?

I use Tracker, its not to pricey ands work great in tree cover. If your bird hunting in open country I go with either the Tracker or Garmins new GPS unit. To find your dogs fast and easy in open country the Garmin product would be best...but running my hounds in treed areas id run into loosing Satt signal with the Garmin off

We use a Quick Track 10 receiver and Wildlife Materials 3850 collars these are a lightweight collar made for Beagles.
The Receiver will run about 550.00 USD and the collars are 135.00 USD.

We hunt in WMU 57 and can reach out to about 10 miles.
If you would like to see my unit PM me I think we live close to each other.

All tracking units are compared to Wildlife Materials Inc. They were the first to come out with good dependable tracking collars and reciever units. I've used most of them. Quick track are really good. Marshall, Klien and Johnson collars are all about the same and equal with Wildlife. I have a Wildlife 2000 reciever but rarely use it--too awkward compared to a Icom RC-10 scanner. The Icom will read any frequency which is important to me so that I can track my buddies dogs too. I bought my Icom off E-Bay for $200--hook it up with a 3 element Yagi and I'm good to go. The unit will pay for itself in saved gas in less than a year.

Thanks for the replys & opinions :)

Any comments on the Tracker Classic system listed here?
Keep in mind I'm using small beagles that don't generally travel the distances a hound will.

Depends on the area you hunt in, our tracking collars, not sure the type, have dead zones around our camp, they work up to around 5 miles, but in some spots with the heavy metals, you cannot get any signal, this is in 63A.

Another question... Are the collars themselves a one size fits all thing? Our beagles we use tend to run small :) like 25lbs. I see on one unit the collars are listed for a 18-24" neck, while my dog measured at 12-14" neck, would that be a problem or can I just add holes & shorten the collar?

Thanks

My collars only wiegh 9 ozs. You could cut them down no problem and punch in a few more holes if you need too.
I just pulled mine out of the collar box to wiegh one--gotta blk & tan and a walker laying on the floor here like they are dead--they run for 12 hours yesterday and the day before. They both bounced up like they are ready to go and are looking pissed that I'm not collaring them up. They wanna hunt.

well i just bought myself a late christmas present..i bought the GPS system with 3 collars. They promised me that it will work here in BC`s dense forest cover and émits a new signal-location every 5 seconds

I`ll be selling my Tracker Classic with 2 Strike collars and a few new batteries (there $9 each, i`ll include them) as soon as i get my system within a weeks time

anyone interested PM me

I've had a Johnson system since 1991 and never had any probs with it,even after leaving it in the back of the truck over night without snapping the lid on in the pouring rain.I've got the RB-10 which will run you about $650US and the collars are $125US each,3 element Yagi ant is $87.00US.You can have up to 20 collars on the reciever if you want but it's really only made for 10.The collars come on sale every fall for $100US each for instock collars only.No probs getting 10 miles out of the collars.I've got 6 collars now and will buy another this fall. The collars come in 4 dif sizes, the "C" size would be best and that runs for 8000 hrs,the other collars are 2000,4000 & 16000 Hr collars. The only downside I've got with these collars is that I have'nt found anyone in Canada that can replace the batteries so they have to be sent back to the US to be repaired but that takes only about 3 weeks from mailing to getting them back.I've only had to change the rechargable batteries in the receiver 1x and that was about 4 yrs ago and got them up here and the original 3 collars I got in 91 were sent back 4 yrs ago as well and I know for sure I got a hell of alot more than 8000 hrs out of them !!!!.
Check out their website www.johnsonstelemetry.com
This is only my findings after using this system for 17 yrs

I got a buddy that has a 10 mile unit with 3 collars, head set, 2 airels The system was just sent out and serviced last winter. He has got out of deer dogs this fall and is selling this for a grand...
