For those interested, Leupold has announced that they will add a 3-9X33mm. EFR scope to their low-cost VX-Freedom lineup. Here's Midway's ad for the scope:

The specs for this newest 3-9 EFR are a length of 11.9" and weight of 12.1 oz. Leupold's earlier listing for their discontinued VX-2 3-9X33 EFR showed a length of 11.6" and weight of 12.0 oz.; so the new VX-Freedom model is very close to its predecessor dimensionally, just very slightly bigger. Just out of curiosity, I got out my early 3-9X33 EFR, which has "VARI-X 3-9 E.F.R." on the objective bell (so earlier than the VX-2 version) and found it to be 11.3" long and 11.5 oz.
Many shooters (myself included) really liked the earlier 3-9X33 EFRs from Leupold (particularly for rimfire rifles), and the big question will be how the VX-Freedom version stacks up optically and operationally. Leupold's MSRP for the VX-2 version was $564.99 (US). Midway's price for the VX-Freedom model is $299.99. The newer model hasn't appeared in Leupold's catalog yet (at least that I could find), so it's not known what they'll give as its MSRP. However, all signs point to the new model being a cheaper scope than its predecessor. We'll have to wait for reviews to learn whether quality has suffered.
