I've narrowed my choice of binoculars down to either the Leupold Cascades 8x42 or Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42. Have any of you compared them side by side, or even better, used both? I've only been able to handle the Leupolds and they seemed really nice but I've read a lot of recommendations for the Nikons.

I've never owned any Nikon products but I have a Leupold scope. I was really impressed with the Leupold service guys when I had them do some work for me.

Wow - some really good prices there.
When I was looking for a mid priced bino, I wasn't very impressed with the Nikons. I ended up buying a set of the Leupold Mojaves - they were about the best I could find in my price range (<$500)

It looks like the Mojaves are really similar to the Cascades except for the open bridge design. Are there any other differences?

I bought the Leupold 10x42 Wind River Cascades a few years ago. After being bounced around in the truck, the quad and around my neck, they are still serving me well. They're rugged, gin-clear optics for the price (I paid $399) and with Leupold's awesome warrenty, you can't go wrong IMHO. Nikon produces excellent cameras, but I have no experience with their scopes & bino's.

About 5 years back I was in the same dilemma, I had my picks narrowed to the Pinnacles and the Monarch's. At the Tradex outdoor show in Abbostford I got to handle both. After about an hour I couldn't tell them apart aside from the price. I went with the Monarchs.

Check out binocularscanada they were at the time the best price around. Also should warranty be an issue? US bought Nikon's weren't warranted in Canada at the time, do some homework about warranty first!!

Also FWIW, they sold 8 pairs of 10x42's for every pair of 8x42. I bought the 10's

Just in case somebody else is also shopping, www.binocularscanada.com has Nikon Monarchs and some others on sale right now. They're an authorized dealer so there shouldn't be any issues getting warranty help.

Thanks for the link Steeleco.
