As the title says, I bought dual dovetail Leupold bases and rings for my new rifle. I finger tightened the bases onto the action and turned in the rings. I planned on using a peice of 1" shaft I have to align the rings(by adjusting them until the shaft sits in them both perfectly). I have heard that you should then lapp the rings with some compound. What compound is appropriate? Is lapping the rings overkill? After lapping, what gets put inside the rings to stop rust? Thanks for looking.

Always lap them... I use 120 grit.

Once you start lapping you will immediately see why rings should be lapped.

I don't worry about rust inside but cold blue would help prevent that a little. I put powdered rosin in the ring after lapping to grip even better.

If you don't want to do any of this you can use Burris Signature Rings. They have floating inserts and require nothing but tightening.

Thanks for the help guys. I will definitly be lapping my rings from now on. After some lapping , I had a look and saw areas that were shone up and areas that were still blue! After round two, 90 - 95% of the rings were scuffed up, so I decided it was done and cleaned them up. When I dropped the scope in it fit like a glove! When tightening the rings the scope didn't turn on me and make the crosshairs crooked, like normally happens. I was also happy to find that the bases had enough play to allow me to line up with the bore.(did that with the 1" shaft in the rings and the bases loose) Now I'm breaking in the barrel.:D
