Good morning, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year. I have the following two scopes. They are both M8-2X Extended ER. I was wondering as to their value and whether or not they would be a good choice on a scout rifle. Any assistance you could provide me with would be greatly appreciated. If there are any scopes that are particularly well suited for the Ruger scout rifle, please let me know. Thanks for looking.

They're one of the few choices out there and should work well. Technically marketed as a pistol scope but are fine on a rifle. Probably worth 150-250 bucks depending on condition.

If the eye-relief is right they will do nicely. Some pistol scopes will have eye-relief that is too long for the scout rifle position. The idea is to be able to shoot with both eyes open. I know I have no trouble doing this with 4x but some people might not be able to use that much. 2x magnification should work for anyone in this application.

This ^ is an important point. If you are tall and/or have a long neck, it is common to find that a pistol scope mounted in the scout position is still much too close to your eye. I like scout rifles and have gone through a lot of different scope models to find the ones that work well on various rifles. The 2x EER Leupold will just barely work for me on a Marlin SBL, using extended Weaver rings and mounting it at the extreme forward position possible. That scope won't work for me on any other scout rifle I've tried; it's still too close to my eye. If you already have the rifle, just shoulder it normally and then hold the scope up above it, moving it forward and backward until you find the correct position for you, and then look to see if the rail will allow attaching the scope at that point.

Leupold is now making an IER scope specifically for scout rifles, I was holding one this morning. I am actually looking for a gloss 2x EER like you have pictured there. If it doesn't work out for you on the rifle, I would be happy to give it a new home. ;)

Yep, Leupold, Burris, Weaver, HiLux and others make Intermediate Eye Relief models that are far superior for scout rifle use than any handgun scope. The Leupold has been around for at least 15 years, since that's how long I've had one of mine (I have 3 of them). If the OP was looking to purchase a scope they would be the obvious choice, but he already owns the Leupold handgun scope, so hopefully he can make it work for him.

The HiLux is sold by Wolverine and it's a zoom 2-7x. I have one of those on a Norinco shortie m305 and it's held zero through 2 1/2 cases of surplus 7.62 ammo, which says good things about their durability. For about half the price of a Leupold, or even less, these are terrific bargains.

Thanks for all the useful info. I have mounted one of the scopes on my scout rifle. Appears to work. I will get out to the range when the weather improves to see how it performs. Thanks again for the help.

I too am looking for some suggestions for an extended eye relief scope on the Roger Gunsite Scout. I have the XS rail to work with as well. Anyone have some more input?

I've got one of these in 2.5 on my 1894 Marlin 44mag.
Deadly at fifty yards.
Might make a hundred yards shooting left handed.
Lots of eye relief. Probably the width of my hand for eye relief.

Thanks for this. I have a c.1935 large-action Martini in .22 Hornet that I'm thinking of putting something like this on, making an adaptor for the original military rear sight mount to take a modern Weaver or other rail. Back in the day they were optionally available with an Ajax 2x.

I had one of those Hi-Lux 2-7x. I got it used from another Gunnutz member and I sold it on because I decided I didn't want that magnification range but there was nothing wrong with the optical quality. I think they are good value.
