Hi folks
Can anyone tell me the difference in clarity and contrast
between the Leupold Mark 4 and VXIII long range target scopes?
In particular the 8.5 X 25 X 50.
I have a VXIII and it is clear and crisp and I was
wondering if the Mark 4 is that much better considering
the $500 or so increase in price.

Thanks
Bill

I love my Mark4 scopes for the super large knobs (one way range only) that are easy to read without my reading glasses. They are quick to turn with gloves on and resist turning when doing my Service Rifle rundowns and rubbing on the side of my tac vest.

Glass ? I can't tell the difference especially when I competed with Side focus'ed Vari-XIII 6.5 x 20 x 40mm using target knobs. With my old eyes, they all look the same, CLEAR !

What I dislike about the Vari X III series is the target knobs needed. You see in Service and Sniper rifle matches, adjustments are a fact of life on the firing mound. The 3 little 1/16" set screws drive me around the bend. The turret caps tend to get lost in the sometimes uncut tall grass at Connaught. Believe me that there are many sniper teams coming back after the mess hall closes to look for their missing Leupold turret covers, I had to do the same after clearing things with Range Control. Those of you who have shot at Connaught know what I'm yakking about.

Now if the VariXIII series fits YOUR game and YOUR budget, then by all means stick with that line of scopes and save your money for practice ammo. If you are a techno-slut/geek like I am , they spring for the Mark4 series.

Okay last consideration: LCV (look cool value).... What works for you ?

Peace be to journey,
Barney

X2...There is no functional difference in optics. I like to shoot guns that are more covette-like than hummer-like, so the spiffy gold ring is more my style
