I was thinking about picking up a Leupold scope.

What is the real difference between the VX-I, VX-II and VX-III's (other than price).

Will a VX-I make me happy? Is the VX-II a happy medium in quality?

Any input would be appreciated.

It's going to sit atop a Rock River Arms National Match A4 (.223).

It's only going to be used on paper, no game.

I'll shoot it out to 600 yards. No low light conditions.

You will require at least a VX-II, but a III is what you will wish you bought. The VX-I makes a passable deer hunting scope, but is not a target scope. It has friction, not click adjustable knobs. The II's have multi-coated lenses, click adjustments and a better reticle. With the III you can get the varmint reticle, great for your .223. Leupold's website spells out the differences well.

You got some good advice RE the Vari X-111, but I might take it a step further. You may want to look at other makes as well such as Bushnell 4200 or Nikon.If you do decide on a Leupold, I would go Vari X-111 as well.
 
In the VX11 line the 4-12x40 and the 6-18x40 have AO (adjustable objective) and considering your requirement to shoot out to 600 yds you will almost certainly need adjustable parallax. If you plan to adjust your scope to hold zero at varying ranges then the target model (6-18x40) would be advisable considering it has target knobs with removable covers. These scopes have the muticoat 4 coatings from the higher end VX 111 on all lenses and obvoiusly click adjustments on the windage and elevation.
 
I got a VXII 4-12x40 AO on my custom 260 Rem, it's one hell of a scope.

Ive owned them all, VXI, VXII, VXIII, and also Vari X III & M8 6x42s. Throw in a new FXIII 6x42 as well.

Hard to beat the VXII, but if you got the extra cash, buy a VXIII.
