I was in Port Huron Michigan on the weekend doing some shopping. We stopped by the local Walmart and was looking through the gun section and was surprised to see several Leupold scopes in the display case. One was a VX-1 3x9x40 on sale for $230.00 (US$). There were 3 others in the case as well but the labels were incorrect and there was no one around with a key to open the case to have a look. Not really surprised. Usually if I see a product at Walmart I think it is going there to die or the company has made a cheaper version just for Walmart.

So my question is would these scopes be the same as the scopes sold at a normal hunting store or a stripped down version ? I have always thought of Leupold as a higher end item far beyond the reach of a store like Walmart.

Walmart in the US sells/has sold firearms such as the Colt LE6920 which is the closest thing to an actual M4 rifle. I'm sure they weren't made any differently for wally world. Walmart happens to be the biggest retailer in the world, I know what you're saying but think about it, they sell Apple products, TVs, gaming consoles etc which in many cases are much more expensive than a VX-1.

I guess Leupold just wants to make sales as well. I have always expected them to be more classy than Wamlart I guess.

nothing wrong with Wal-Mart or Leupold selling to them, they have a target audience to cater to and a vast one at that... it's just a guess as I don't shop at Wal-Mart, but the VX1 is probably a top-line scope there. I wouldn't expect to see VX3's or better there... ever.

edit: regarding the quality, if Leupold's wal-mart scopes carry the same warranty as their 'gun store' VX1's, I don't think there's anything to worry about.

Just a guess but are they green ring Leupolds instead of the regular Gold ring? The green ring scopes are not manufactured in the US.
