As long as it has target turrets and an adjustable objective, it should work just fine.
Leupold will swap out any reticle they make for any other as long as they fit into the scope. In other words, they can't put a 30mm reticle into a 1 inch tube. Otherwise, they will gladly swap out a reticle for a price. Also, they will make adjustment turrets with the ranges already marked onto them for you. You have to send in the bullets velocity, ballistic coefficient, and a few other items, but a friend of mine has one, and says it is right on at all ranges. He loves it. I had already purchased a few mark 4's for various rifles, or would have considered going the VX III route.

get the varmint reticle and figure out your ballistics, i find it easier to use than the mildots (that's me anyways...)
Vx-iii
I have a VX-III not the Vari-X III model in 6.5-20X50 SF TT on a Savage 308 and have used it at 300, 500, 600 and 800 yards. I really like it and the price fit my resources at the time. It only has the duplex reticle but I don't really require anything else as I just use the target turrets for adjustments.
A friend of mine was stating that the VX-III 6.5-20X50 SF TT is the scope the German team uses during the olympics or something. They chose that scope based on it's performance, durability and repeatability.

Actually I don't want to confuse you but Leupold in their infinite wisdom has three scopes all named very similar.
The Vari-X III was the older top of the line model.
The VX-III is the current model with more features.
The next generation is the VX-3 line that is coming out soon or already has in the US. It has better lens coatings and indexed matched lens etc.
Note the slight variations in the names, makes you want to scratch your head.
