Leupold VX-1

Bought my first Leupold today. A VX-1 3-9X40 for $290 taxes in.

Not sure what to expect but thought for that price I would try it. I currently have Bushnell Elite 4200's 2.5-10X40 on a couple rifles along with a couple Burris FFII 3-9X40 and just purchased a Bushnell Elite 3-9X40 that should arrive shortly.

How would you rate the VX-1 to what I currently use?

Just sold a VXl 4-12x40 not long ago. It was on my big game rifle, a 270wsm for close to 10 years. No complaints performance wise. Always held zero, even when it fell off the tonneau cover of the truck. Think my eyes are getting worse as it didn't seem to gather light at dusk this past deer season like it did previous years which is why I sold it. Couple things I didn't like about it was the extremely stiff to turn magnification ring and the soft friction adjustments. Maybe these issues were rectified with newer models. I also have an Elite 3-9x40 which probably has comparable glass but its on a rimfire and I have no idea about its light gathering capability as its only used during daylight hours. But I do like the adjustments much better on the Bushnell.

I would say the VXI would be comparable to the 3200.

The newer ones have a definite click for each 1/4" of adjustment at 100 yards. I didn't notice the magnification ring difficult to turn either. I'd say it would be somewhere between the 3200 and the 4200. The 6500 is supposed to be on the same level as the VX3's so I've been told by guys who own both scopes.

can't believe how much the VX1 has gone up in price to reflect our shoddy Cdn. dollar. Saw them at Wholesale Sports last week for $359 plus tax (OUCH!) so the price you got yours for is quite reasonable.

I have had an elite 3200 for 5 years... Not a bad scope, but a couple good friends of mine have a vx-1 and a vx-2, and they are both better scopes than the elite 3200. The vx-1 is just slightly better though, in my opinion.
I have some experience with the elite 4200, and while I think they are a real nice scope, the vx-3 is better. I know two guys that got rid of elite 4200's and replaced them with vx-2's, and call them better than the 4200.

I have a VX-1 4-12x40. I'd rate it slightly better than my Bushnell 3200s or my Burris Fullfield but not as good as a 4200. I think the glass on the Burris is better than the VX-1 but I don't like the turrets on the Burris.
