I have been shopping around and can't decide between the leupold vx-2 3-9 x 40 at $349 or the Nikon pro staff 5 xr 3.5-14 x 40. I realize the Leupold is great. I have however, never had a Nikon. They seem to come with a similar warranty on paper, but in real life, I don't know. Also, how is the quality? The Nikon is priced at $329, reg $429 at bass pro. Both scopes come with custom turrets. Opinions or experience welcome.

Warranty is full factory warranty at any one of our three Canadian service locations (Montreal, Mississauga, Richmond). The Prostaff 5 is our replacement for our Buckmaster line of scopes and I think you'll see a lot of favorable comments on those here on CGN. That's a pretty great price too.

Nothing wrong with the Leupold they make a great product but take a look at our ballistic software. We can tailor that Prostaff scope to your gun and load. http://www.nikonsportoptics.com/en/Nikon-Products/Hunting-SpotOn/index.page

With Nikon, you get a lot of scope for your money.
Unfortunately, their warranty it is a pain in the... back.
I had to deal with their warranty department, in Canada, for a camera and for a scope.
They do everything they can to avoid repairs under warranty, and charge you.
They charged me 55$ shipping, for a 3 months old camera, from Richmond to Delta (~ 15 minutes drive).
When I asked to pick up the camera, they said that it is not possible.
The new Prostaff 5 2.5-10x 42 it is a great scope for the money. I have one, bought from a US website, and in my opinion,
can stand in line with 500-600$ scope from other brands.

And by the way,Mr. Nikon Travi, what means " full factory warranty"?

Thanks Travis, is the warranty lifetime replacement, no hassle similar to leupold? Also, is it transferable?
Thanks

Yes, we have recently re-worked our warranty in Canada so that you no longer have to fill out the 1970's card in the box and mail it away. We do ask to speed up the process if you do happen to have the original receipt to copy it and include it with your product if it has to go in. We try to protect our Canadian retailers against grey market scopes in the Canadian marketplace or even scopes coming up from across the border. Unfortunately that's not fair to our retailers who are trying to make a living employing Canadians and dealing in Canada who can't ship product the other way.

As far as "factory warranty", what we mean by that is your product is actually looked at by a Nikon technician. Your product is not outsourced to a 3rd party, I may be wrong on this but I believe we are the only brand of riflescope in Canada that can make that claim anymore. When you send a product in to one of our three facilities it is dealt with by Nikon Canada. No distributor or sent off to US to be dealt with.

Unfortunately my sole experience with Nikon Canada's warranty was not a good one. I was basically told the damage ( binoculars not a scope) was my fault and for a couple hundred bucks they would sell me a new one. The damage was the eye cups and since then I have had a couple others break in the same way. The area where they thread onto the binoculars keeps splitting. I believe I've replaced them 4 or 5 times now at a cost of $10-15 each. That's avoiding an obligation to provide service and as a result this is my last Nikon product.

I own about 15 Leupolds and have yet to have a problem. I did send an old one in to have the reticle replaced ( there was nothing wrong with it I just didn't care for the one it had). The scope came back with a new reticle and they even did extra work to turn it back to " like new" and never charged me. That's customer service.
