I'm looking for a scope for my Rem 700 7mm RUM.
Right now I'm using a POS Bushnell 3x9 just so I can get some rounds through my gun at the range.

Ideally I'd like a VX-III 4.5x14x50 LR with the B&C reticle but it might be out of the price range for now.

I've been looking at the Leupold VX-II 4x12 50mm with the LR reticle. Seems to fit what I need and at an affordable price.

I plan on using the gun mainly to shoot 200-400 yard gongs but would still like to take it out hunting from time to time if I'm looking for some long range (300 yard plus) shooting.

Will the Leupold VX-II 4x12 50mm with the LR reticle do the job or do you expect I'll have problems focusing on longer range targets if I dont have either the adjustable objective lens or the VX-III LR with the 30mm tube and adjustable side focus?

If this scope will do the job for now I can always move it along to another gun in the future. I'd just hate to buy the scope and find out anything over 9x magnification is fuzzy without the adjustable focus (side or objective)

Any thoughts?

For the uses you describe,I would go with either a Leupold VXII 4x12x40,or even better for hunting ,an elite 4200 2.5x10x40.
My own 300RUM and 7mm stw rifles all wear 3x10x42 scopes, and I find 10x plenty for big game hunting or shooting gongs out to 500 meters.

For even less money,my 7mmimperial mag(virtually identical in performance to the 7mmRUM) wears an elite 3x9x40 scope, and it does fine shooting out to 500 meters at the range.
