Thinking about purchasing one of these in 2-7. Seems to be getting great reviews. Anybody have any experience with this scope? Thoughts on it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Can only comment on the 4-12x40.I have vx111,vx3 that are not as clear.Have you looked through them?

No I have not looked through them. They seem to be getting amazing reviews and it got scope of the year in 2011. How's your 4-12? How's the clarity? Are you saying the VX-R is clearer than the VX3 or not as clear?

The VX-R is the best I own.It is very sharp, with exellent eye reliefe. If you get a chance check them out in person. They are under seven hundred. Gary...

appreciate the replies Gary. I just ordered a 2-7x33 VX-R from Prophet River with duplex reticle. It was $509, which is by far the lowest price I have seen at a dealer on one. It can't get here soon enough.

There is a patrol version out in the states now, here in Jan/Feb all black with no gold ring on the front . Two versions a 1.25-4x20 and a 3-9x40 . The 3-9 is mil radian turrets with a TMR reticle in mils. Thinking of this on a new ar service rifle for the spring, looks like a great value with the illuminate centre dot.

I was thinking of a 2-7 for my .338 Federal. But I was under the impression this was just a 30mm VXII?

From what I understand, this is incorrect. The VX-R is optically similar to the VX-3 (not the VX-III or VX-II). Also, it features the illuminated red dot in the middle of the reticle. Also, the 2-7 is 33mm, not 30mm. I will submit a review of this scope on this thread when it gets here this week. It seems like there is limited opinion on this scope on gunnutz, which I don't understand because it seems like a dream hunting scope: red dot speed and target acquisition with variable magnification and amazing light transmission.

I don't know if it's just one the one reticle, but the one I played with was cool but I really wasn't into how thick the cross hairs were.

Probably just the reticle. The firedot duplex is just a standard leupold duplex reticle, no different than any other leupold duplex. You might have been looking at the #4, which has very thick cross hairs.

I'm pretty sure Archie was referring to the tube size not the objective size. I've got a 3-9x40 CDS VX-R and yes the recticle is a little heavier compared to my VXIII 2.5-8 but I think it's do to the illuminated dot in the center. I would definitely buy another one as I think they are just as good as my VXIII, but the 30mm tube make's them a little heavy. I don't think you can go wrong.

I think its better glass than the vx-3 to my eyes.Have a look at the Leupold website, you can check out the choices for yourself.I have had the VX-R 4-12x40 with the Fire Dot-4 since summer. It has the heavy crosshairs for my 50 year old eyes. They are all in the 30mm tube. They are quite compact.

Yes, my apologies to Archie, I stand corrected. The VX-R does have a 30mm tube.
