Hi Guys,

My buddy and I went into Cabelas today to buy a scope. His price range was $500 give or take a few bucks, but he said he wanted something a little more powerful than a 3x9. I told him he should be comparing Cabelas 50th Anniversary Leupold VX3 3.5x10x40 ($500), Minox ZA5 3x15x42 ($530), Nikon Monarch 3x12x42 ($530), and the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40. Anyhow, he looked at the first three, and right away the guy talked him out of the Minox, which I didn't agree with, but whatever. The Nikon also had nice glass, and it had an adjustable objective too. The guy at the counter, who was very helpful btw, told him that the parallax turret was actually a ballistic drop turret that he could program with load data on the Nikon website. I said, "Are you sure?" Dude said, "Absolutely." My buddy was down on that because it would cost him an extra $100 bucks or so from Korth for a custom turret if he went with the VX3. The fellas behind the counter then gave him an extra $80 off because it was the last scope in the store of that model. Bonus!. My buddy thinks this is Christmas morning and whips out his Visa.

He gets home and goes on Nikon's website to enter his load data like buddy told him, and he finds out that the turret is for parallax.

I told him he should reconsider the issue and make a call between the Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40 or the Leupold VX3 3.5x10x40 for the same money.

Do any of you think he should keep the Nikon?

Please give your thoughts if you've had experience with these scopes. My friend will be looking at this as a long-term purchase.

Thanks.

I would go with the Leupold or Conquest. I don't like Nikon's warranty period - they are pretty brutal. I have used Leupold's warranty and it is top notch. Zeiss is a good company but I prefer the US made Leupolds to the Zeiss which I believe is US assembled with Hungarian parts but both of those scopes are pretty good.

Got anymore info on the Cabelas 50th Anniversary Leupold VX3 3.5x10x40 ? I searched Cabelas.ca and can't find mention of the scope...

I find the VX-3 brighter, lighter and less bulky. Warranty is always top-notch and lots of options and accessories.
I'd go Leupold.

The Conquest uses lenses ground from high quality Teutonic shot glasses. The lens coatings are made from only the highest quality Schnapps.
Seriously though,it does say ZEISS on the scope which must mean it comes from Germany and is without optical equal in its respective price range...right? ;)

???? really....conquest

I have looked through both brands in the search for a new scope on my yote rifle..... I will give the nod to Leupold..... I couldn't tell the difference between the 2 and I choose to opt for warranty availability as well as cost

Conquest it is brighter at dusk and dawn, hands down. You won't notice a difference though until the first or last few minutes of light, in normal daylight they will all look the same.

Have to look into more of the mechanics of the scopes.A big difference between Leupold and Zeiss is eye relief.

Varying eye relief for the Leupold throughout the magnification range and constant for the Zeiss, it is often overlooked when comparing the two and could make a big difference to what the shooters eye prefers and works well with.

As for the Nikon, no idea, never looked through one but I would venture that the Leupold and Zeiss aren't the direct competition of the Nikon, Nikon possibly being slightly less advanced optically.

choices

I have all 3 of these scopes we are comparing and for the mone I'd take the nikon monarch every time. My opinion they are one of the best values in scopes in todays Canadian market place. The Hawke brand is not too popular just yet in Canada and I have a couple of the SF 6-24 Varmiint models and for the price tag of $220.00 they are might tough to beat. FS

Obvious you have not looked thru many scopes!

I have.

I see no difference in bright light between a Conquest and a VX3. I was not commenting on scopes in general. A Swarovski z6 has better clarity in daylight than a Tasco. But if you find a big difference between a VX3 and a Conquest in bright light then I guess you just have better eyes than I do.
