For what it is worth, I decided that a VX-L was plenty enough scope for my hunting needs. Last fall, I picked up a 4.5-14×56mm Long Range with the Boone & Crockett reticle and the Alumina 'Flip-back' lens covers. The cost jump to the VX-7 series just wasn't justified in my opinion.
I had the scope sighted in at the range within 4 shots at 100yards, and then another three at 200. Impressive grouping for my skill level.
I was hunting deer with this mounted on a Ruger M77 Mark II 30-06 this season and was completely impressed. I got ribbed a bit around the campfire for having such a big-ass scope, but it performed flawlessly.
BTW, plan your scope mounts in advance. My tube diameter was 30mm which took a bit of looking to find mounts for the Ruger. Depending upon what model you are looking for you could be looking at a 34mm tube diameter, which I imagine are even rarer.
Not impressed for the price. VXIII is more then plenty, if I had to do it again probably would have gone with 6500 inseated of the VXIII. Also compared it to my 4200, VXIII, VXII and Monarch, there is no way I could justify the price increase.
