Lever Action Calibers?

The .358 Winchester is a good bet for short to mid-distance (250 yards) hunting. It's a significant step up from the 35 Remington and will make its .35 inch hole with a good variety of bullet weights. I'm using a 99 Savage, which was rebored from .308 to .358, throwing 250 gr Hornady Interlocks at around 2300 fps...no need for premiums with that size of bullet travelling at that speed. The BLR was available in .358 a couple years ago...not sure whether it still is or not. Savage did produce the 99 in .358, but they are not easy to find, and are usually pretty costly even if you are fortunate enough to come across one.

been usin the hornady leverevolution ammo with my 30/30 the last year. 100 yrds an in is bad news for pretty much any critter. i have used it to knock over my 5x5 bull elk this fall, a young bull moose last winter an a couple of nice jumpers. open sights, lever action, bush all seem to go hand in hand. a neck shot on the bigger critters is awfully hard to get up from, my elk folded up pretty neatly and one in back of the head to finish him. the moose took a few in the neck but the first one sure slowed him down for the last 2. course it helps that i been shootin that rig for the past 25 yrs. i have a 30-06 but i use that one sparingly. walkin about with the ol 94 is the c**k for dolly as far as i'm concerned, thas my 0.02 anyhoo.

I opted for the .444 Marlin. Although I still have to harvest an animal, I do like it's performance on paper. I load 265gr. Hornady's for it, it has plenty of punch and consistently rings the gong out to 200 yds. It has become my favourite scabbard gun. Hopefully we'll connect with an elk in the next few days.

Another alternative is for a 308 is a Winchester Model 88, used of course. They are a handy rifle with a modern action. Another modern design leaver is the Sako Finnwolf, if you can find, and afford one.

I picked up a real cherry 99c 308 at the gun show in Kamloops this spring and it is becoming my fave bush gun. Solid magazine arrangement and real nice action. I have a 30-06 but this one is a lot more fun to shoot and it fits nice too.

do yourself a favor and get at least 1 spare mag- wholesale sports used to carry them, ( maybe still do) -i've put a piece of electricians tape over mine ( both the button and the mag- on the bottom) so it won't eject at an inopportune time

good luck finding either of those- while the model 88 win is a modern action, there haven't been any made since the 60-70's

Actually Model 88's come up fairly often and I have seen a few advertised in the EE this year. Not likely to find a Finnwolf though.

an a couple of nice jumpers

For the people who are not in/didn't come from, Saskatchewan of Manitoba, you had better explain what "jumpers" are!

This reply was suposed to be a quote from "Bannock n Baloney," but his name failed to get in it.

There is no shortage of calilbers to choose in a lever. Since you mentioned you don't reload, then easy off the shelf cartridges like 30-30, 308 and 300 sav are all available at most Canadian Tire stores. If you don't mind picking up enough ammo before you head out there is the 284 win, 375 win, 7mm-08 and 250 sav to mention a few that have not already been mentioned. Savage alone chambered the 99 in 15 different calibers.

I'd second a Model 88 in .308. Got to using my Dad's this last weekend and am now devising plans to get my grubby mitts on it. The triiger sucks at the bench but when Bambi's in the sights, you don't notice it a bit.
