The 250 Savage (or "250-3000", depending on its vintage) in a model 99 Savage is a fast, light, flat shooting combination quite capable of taking deer and similar sized game.

One noteable difference between the BLR and the Savage is that the trigger group moves with the lever on a BLR, and not with the Savage.
I've never caught my finger between the lever and the triger, but my buddy did...he didn't look very happy and sounded less happy. Took a big chunk out of his digit.
Another option is the Win. 88, although the trigger isn't very nice on them.

well........Woodsman, I need to respectfully disagree with you. BLRs are my favourite hunting rifle, period. I have owned dozens of them, and in many chamberings. They are exceptional HUNTING guns, and accuracy is very very good for a hunting gun. But they are NOT as inherently accurate as a bolt gun, and cannot be because of the way they are made.

If you do not believe me, get a half dozen bolt guns and a half-dozen BLRs together in similar chamberings and with similar (or the same) ammo and have a shoot-off. The bolt guns will win, hands down every time. And I have a hundred bucks to wager on it if you are a sporting fellow....

But NOBODY will take my hunting BLR away from me, it is one of the two guns they will have to pry from my cold dead fingers.

The trigger moves with the lever on the 88 Winchester as well.
I don't have Dougs experience with numbers of BLRs, but, those that I have used, made me buy the 88.
The BLR has an inconsistent trigger, and I think that's true of most lever guns that have triggers that move with the lever, including the 88. But, in my case anyway, the 88's trigger is better.
BLR's are a lot easier to find than good 88's, still worth taking a look though.
The 88 is available in either carbine, or rifle version.

Doug, well my own experience is with my friends .308 BLR and not the dozens you owned, so you know more than me and I stand corrected. But If I compare it to my Winchester 94 .30-30...

Back to Woodsman, you are entirely right THERE, my friend! :p

The 94 gives minute of deer accuracy, the BLR out of the box gives about 2 moa and can shoot moa in a good one with good ammo and a good shooter. But "most" bolt guns can do better than that with the same parameters, that's all. ;)
