I apologize if this is a silly question, but as a left handed shooter (newbie) can i shoot a right handed AR without dining on a mit full of brass, or am I forever doomed to the bare and dusty "For Lefties Only" corner of the local gunshops?

If anyone knows a source for a LH AR, or if there are other issues I might not be aware of regarding a lefty shooting a righthanded rifle please let me know.

My many thanks in advance.

http://www.armseast.com/leftyrifles.html is your source for LH AR's.

That being said, I'm a lefite, and have no problem with the AR platform - as long as it's not an A1 (with no casing deflector!). That can leave little burn marks on your cheek.

I'm currently looking for an ambi AR safety - that's only a 'nice to have' for lefites, in my opinion.

Welcome to the site!

I'm not a leftie (thank glub! :runaway:), but for range use I can see no reason that a left-ejecting AR is a "must have". Lots of lefties shoot AR platforms (some on full auto) just fine, as long as they have the brass deflector.

Does anyone know if this holds true with 9mm AR's? I haven't tried firing mine left handed. I know it's got a honkin' big deflector hanging out there like some kinda speedbrake on a Russian aircraft. :D

Thanks for the welcome aswell as the info!! I'll keep an eye out for an AR ambi safety for you.

How about shotguns? Any concers there?

I've never had a problem with ANY shotgun. Pump, semi, over/under - I can use them all without issue.

The only minor complaint is the 'backwards' safety on 870s and others.. It takes some getting used to (as they are designed for righties), but with practice, I'm still faster on the shot that any of my frends. :)

If POSSIBLE, for a 'do all' shotgun, I'd pick something with a tang safety - like a Mossberg. That way, you're not 'disadvantaged', as you can reach it with either thumb.

If the standard AR was originally LH ejection, it would work fine for right hand shooters thought they would have an open ejection port in front of their open eye and would have shells ejecting across their face. I doubt many RH shooters would choose to stick with the LH version once a RH unit was introduced ;)

Leftys report they love the 15L. I just wish we had some to sell this week.
We have ambi-safetys for $37.85:popCorn:

Tru dat. Just because you CAN use something that's less than ideal for you, doesn't mean that you SHOULD if you don't want to. :)

Agreed

Don't forget that the controls as well are all on the wrong side of the AR for left handed shooters.

Bolt release
safety
mag release
takedown pin
rear site controls

I have an AR SP1 with no case deflector and I routinely get brass burns on my cheek and down my neck. For some reason, mine loves to throw the brass rearward. My friend's SP2 (with no deflector either) throws them straight to the side and i don't get hit with them.
