What is the life expectancy of a 300 win mag barrel?

Before it loses enough accuracy to notice.

It will mostly be used as a hunting weapon from now on, so I guess 300 yards and under. I've used it for target shooting before.

Reg barrel.

Thanks

I've read online people saying around 1500 rounds. Seems low to me isnt it? Maybe it applies just to precision shooting, or is 300 win mag that much of a barrel eater?

Maybe I shouldnt get a 300 win mag as my everyday target shooting weapon because of poor barrel life? At the same time, I dont really feel like buying a 308 for target. Id rather just have one precision rifle for med/long range, and hunting....

Hunting WEAPON? Hmmmm..........

back when CGN was new Farmboy and I both shot 300WM (Rem Sendero ) if I remember right the throat was gone around 1300rds but his still shot great

I was using the 178Amax going real fast and he was running the 190SMK

Oh and where do you get new barrels by the way??? Lets say I buy a savage 110 FCP Hs precision 300 win mag, what kind of barrel do I use to replace the factory one once it's used ?

Any brand/make that you can find. You have 100's of options, not a problem. The problem is finding a good smith and the wait.

Is it easy to replace your savage barrell yourself or you cant do it ?

No it's a job for a plumber. You need a barrel vice, action wrench, barrel nut wrench and go/no guages. I meant having a blank turned, threaded and chambered to fit a Savage. It's hard to find a good smith to do the work in a timely manner, most of the top smiths laugh when you ask them to work on a Savage. If you go the pre-chambered route, it could be a 4+ month wait for the barrel. If you go the pre-chambered route you may also have to send it to a smith and have it throated to accept the 230's? Not sure if the pre-chambered barrel manufacturers would custom chamber the barrel in 300 wm to accomodate the 230's or if it's just a standard 300 wm reamer they use. No point going with a 300 wm or a pre-chambered barrel if you can't shoot the new vld's, mine as well just get the 338lm. The ballistics of the 300 wm/230 hybrid vld are very similar to the 338lm/250 gr lapua loads.

I got about 1,400 rounds through my Sako TRG 300WM and by then the throat was noticably "rough". Copper fouling took over and it was time for a new barrel.

Spinning a new pipe on a savage is an extremely easy process. It takes me about 20 minutes to swap a barrel. All you need is head space guages and a barrel nut wrench. A standard bench vise will work with a good jaw insert that won't leave marks in the barrel. Check out replaceable jaws used for doing fork seals on motorcycles.
