lifetime rifle for my son

I personally lean towards stainless and synthetics for my purchases, but if my father gave me a nice super grade or anything quality blued+walnut I would keep that forever, full stop. My daughter is nearing 6 months old so I think of these things regularly now.

Zastava M70 in .308, or .30-06, Winchester Model 70 All-Weather in the same calibers, Cz 527 Synthetic in 7.62x39 (great choice for him to learn on), or something, anything that's nitrided.

Additionally, maybe consider a nice .22. If he's anything like the hunters I know 2/3rds of their hunting are varmints. Just learning that myself, as I learn the ropes of hunting.

Unless he is stuck on walnut/blued, I would go with a stainless synthetic... the M70 All Weather is an excellent choice, .308 or .30/06 are both good as is .280... top it with a Leupold VX-3 HD 4.5-14X40 or 3.5-10X40, give him the balance in cash for hunting gear and ammunition.
