Hi all,

I'm looking for something to add to my Maverick 88. I am not trying to turn it into a gun worthy of "tactical shotgun magazine" cover page, just something handy and convenient. It's got be usable day/night so that's why I'm looking for something that works well at night such as a laser or light.

Price is also an issue. I need the most bang for the littlest buck. The device doesn't have to be one of the brand name that normally has a high associated cost, but it has to work. So I don't care if it comes from an unknown company, if you've tried it and it still works well and yet costed 1/2 the cost of the real thing, then it's good for me.

So, here are some requirements:

- cost effective
- reliable for "casual" use
- easy to install
- makes the weapon usable/easy to "aim" at night

- extra bonus points if I can transfer it to my rail equipped pistols (but not necessary)

If you can also tell me where I can acquire this then please let me know.

Appreciate your input.

Don't bother with the laser, just get a good flashlight. As chip has stated, one can be found at marstar.

how handy are u with tools??? here is my setup on a mossy 500. i call it snake eyes. it's deadly in low light. the lasers come from laser levels.
CT had them at clearance prices like $4 each a few years ago. i bought a few dozz of them. 2 AA batters fit in the front pistol grip so there are no
wires to get snagged up jb

Not very handy with tools myself... That's a nice set up you got there though. Might have to give it a try. Can you adjust the lasers somehow or did you sight them during the installation process?

chipman181: Marstar has everything you need.Rail clamps on barrel, laser clamps on rail.

Maybe, but everytime I look on their website for shotgun stuff (i.e: clamp on flashlight holder and stuff), they are "sold out". Is it just a web problem? That would be convenient as I could mount one of my unused Surefire.

the lasers are sighted during the instalation, i used a 10 ft EMT electricl
tubing, 2 wraps of electrical tape around the tubeing and it was a snug fit in the barrel. a plastic card hung from the end of the tubeing with all calculated
aim points. these lasers are in a 5/16 inch brass housing. the holders are
are a tad oversize and a few drops of 680 locktight and u have about a
minute to line it up and thats it. locktight has an afinnity for copper and
brass is a copper alloy. no activator needed on brass is what i'm trying to say.
i tested the batterys life by tapeing the switch on and it was still going
after 24 hrs and i stoped the test.

Don't waste your money on plastic and dollar-store junk.

Get a quality weaponlight (of which there are many to choose from) like the Surefire X300 and a quality picatinny mount to fit your shotgun (of which there are many to choose from) like the discontinued Sidearmor mount. On and off in seconds, versatile and combat-ready quality, you'll only have to buy it once.

There are lots of options at Brownells

Just putting that back up there... Any other opinion? I looked at Marstar stuff and everything appears to be consistently SOLD OUT. Too bad...

*sigh* you actually made me have to click on stuff to find this :(

that is the cheapest, functional picatinny mount laser you can find, at $16 shipped. all aluminum build, no plastic. ive had one for over a year on a Weihrauch HW40 air pistol, that mainly gets used by destructive little brats - despite this its held up fine and is no worse for wear. it also comes with a clamp mount, though id either buy an inexpensive Streamlight style picatinny mount or custom inlet a small piece of rail on my handguard before i resorted to the clamp style mount.
the reticle adjustment is a bit annoying - its similar to the external adjust Unertl scopes and uses set screws to center the laser emitter, but it works and holds zero once its adjusted. it should hold zero even on a 12ga, but if it doesnt for $16 you cant really complain - ive paid more for a hamburger.

Glad I checked this thread again between gathering the above item... I'll give this site a look. Thank you kindly.

I picked up a Tacstar T-6 flashlight for my SN tactical for $50 and a barrel mount for $20 at wholesale sports. The light is very bright, and all aluminum too. With it mounted under the barrel, infront of the mag tube, I can clearly see the front post of my ghost ring sights in the dark, and the light concentrates just below my point of aim. Like any sight, a laser is only good if you can identify your target, and the flashlight will do that to outside the effective range of your mossy, and give a solid silhouette of your front sight. Ncstar has light/laser combo's as well for a little more cash.

Not to bash on the Tacstar approach, but a tape switch on a pump gun is a going to snap off on you.
Pony up to a purpuse built weapon light if you are serious about having a light at all. You get what you pay for when it comes to glass and mounts.

I must not be looking at the right Wholesale Sport store. Are you talking about the shop in Edmonton? Their online website has nothing close to what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, I moved away from Edmonton to a tiny maritimes town that sees no purposes in guns and there are therefore nothing for guns lovers around. That only leaves the internet (thank God!). If you have a website in mind, please let me know.

On a different note, I looked around a little and it seems like all the cheap stuff is designed for airsofters and I doubt would last long on a shotgun, so I might just pony up some money and get something good right off the bat. All that being said, if there's a way to get something good that isn't as expensive as the shotgun itself, then that would be great.

Thanks for your guys posts BTW, please keep them coming!

The most Ideal setup is the Surefire 623FGA, this has a lockout swtich.
This setup will be the end all when it comes to compromises, its a no nonsense setup that works.

Some have good success mounting a G2 onto a forgrip, but I see this as a compromise since the mount/light may fail with lots of rapid movement of the pump. Didicated mounts to the barrel works better in my view if you intend to put a mount on it, but you will loose the momentary on option since I do not advocate remote switches. Fenix makes some decent lights if you are on a budget, and stay away from the multi modes if you are going to use it as a weapon light.
The best is to stick to real weapon lights (X300, TRL-2...), as they are designed to take the recoil.
