I have came across a very interesting thing and am unsure if others are aware of this or not. All though I like the new Hornady 58 gn V-Max predator ammo I have noticed just how finicky they are in wind and I mean any wind.
Over the years I have always shot the 85-100 gn bullets and never seen such a difference even on a windy day. Now that I have changed over to try a bullet type that is going to give me a flater tajectory, I have to now what the wind and now have to compinsate for the direction that it is coming from.
Being a fine tuner of rifle sighting in I noticed to zerro in these light weight bullet types seem to change on a 100 yard range easy or just enough that with a very so sight swirling wind the bullet can move 1/4 -1/2 in depending on the way its blowing.
After shooting at an easy 150 max shot at the front of the yote only(no body shot) with a very slight cross wind, my POI was in the hair but close enough to cut the hair off long and not hit the yote. This bothered me but had to wonder if the cross wind played a part ofmoving the bullet in the 150 yd range. After seeing shots the last couple weeks of shooting a foot and even more at longer ranges in a heavy cross wind and hitting perfectly. Not that I did it because I knew, I just happened to fluke and wondered why I was missing at 250yds and another at 400 another day.
Today a friend came over to fine tune his 22-250 and hes shooting the same ammo as I do. He got this rifle shooting good and real good but could not understand why he could not touch the shells and when he adjust the scope 3 clicks at 100yds that the bullet moved and inch or even a touch more. Thats when I noticed that my range the wind a very slightly swirling and would blow from the left one time and then would blow from the right the next shot.
I said I believe its the wind and evenwith the slightest wind these bullets are moving ever so much on paper which can cause the difference in 3 clicks. He moved it back 1 click and shot and it hit exsactly where he wanted.
I then said I'll take a shot with the 243 at the top left side, Bottom right orange square. The last time I fined tuned my Varmit rifle I had these bullets hitting 1 inch high at 100 yards which most shots will be in the 100-200 yards range here where I hunt. I waited for a calm time and squeezed off.
All this testing is done with a Cadwell lead sled and I lined up my gun to test this shot and to see why I may have only Cut the hair off the yote this morning (Long Hair) telling me that I never missed by much.
Remember that shooting through a scope at 100 yds with the crosshairs on the orange 1inch square that the crosshair center covers the whole square so its hard to tell exsactly where they are held.
