I've been playing around with loads for the 45-100 (2.6") that don't kick the hell out of me.
I found this load nice to shoot and accurate:

558gr. DD paper patch wrapped with .002" onion skin paper. (.459")
Fire formed Starline cases, unsized. The rifle has a tight paper patch chamber.
Winchester WLR primers. .003 coffee filter paper over primer.
75grs. Goex FFg.
.060 Poly wad and .025 Milk Carton wad over powder.
Powder compressed .100" with die.
.025 Grease cookie (SPG) and a.060 Veggy wad.
The bullet firmly hand seated.
OAL 3.335"
1885 Winchester High Wall (C-Sharps) with 28" MVA scope.

100yds. off bench X-sticks. Bright sky, cloudy, no wind.
2 x sight adjustments. 3 MOA left after 1st shot, 1 1/2 MOA back right, 5 shot group, then over cast for last 2 shots.

I'll be trying this load at 200yds. next time i am at the range.

I had basically exact same gun. Mine was 45/70 with what c sharps called a paper patch through. I think my serial number was w181. I sold this gun over 25 years ago and it's crazy that I can remember the serial number but yet I forget people's names.
I could never get it to shoot as accurately as I wanted unless I cleaned the barrel between shots.
C. Sharps had lots of complaints from guys about his paper patch throat. C. Offered free rechambering to customers. Example rechambered mine to 45/90

I got me High Wall from a guy in Grande Prairie. It was in 45-70 and leaded badly after 3 rounds. I had it rechambered to 45-100 and i have shot good groups out to 800 yds.
Full house loads are hard on my old body.
