Hello all, I am picking up a win94 for my son's first deer rifle. He is 11 and a good size lad but I thought I should load up some light plinking loads for him to start so he gets used to it without developing a flinch. He has never shot anything bigger than 22lr thus far. As he gets more confident I can slowly increase the power to full house hunting loads.

I was thinking of using the cheap plated bullets Henry has in stock 110gr rn or 150gr rn

Thanks guys any help appreciated.

I shoot a lot of Lee 150 grain FN cast bullets for light loads in my .30-30. I generally use about 5-6 grains of Red Dot, or 700-X for these loads. Without gas checks and hand lubed these bullets will do a nice one inch group at 50 yards, and recoil is minimal. You could use the same powder weight for 110 grain bullets for even less recoil.
I have not used the plated bullets, but results should be similar to those from cast bullets.

I love Trail Boss!
I shoot 175 gr lead bullets over 8 gr of trail boss. It's like shooting pistol bullets out of a carbine. I can hit a 8" gong at 100 yds with the buckhorns.
I'm going to do a similar load for my .303 shortly.

I like Trail Boss as well.
Bulky, so no chance of accidentally double charging.
I use 10 grains of TB behind a 154 grain cast Gas Checked bullet.
Very mild and very accurate in my M94 Winchester.
At 100 yards, it shoots 12" lower than my hunting loads. lol.

I'm just having a look through my reloading notes, have a few gentle plinker loads. They went through a Marlin 30AS, but can't see why they wouldn't work for you.

Using a Lee C309-113-F (aka soupcan) although you should be able to use the data for the Berrys bullets no problem.

Using Unique powder, anywhere from 6 grains to 9 grains( you can kick them harder with a gas check on, 9-12 grains). A note that they shoot okay @50 meters, and the 9 grain load shoots to point of aim/rear sight highest setting.

What weight are the soupcan bullets? 110gr?

Thanks - so I think I will try the 110gr rn berry's bullets with unique. Start at 6gr and make sure it has enough omph to clear the barrel.;)

If you have plated bullets I would probably start them off a little higher than 6 grains Unique. I was testing gas check bullets without gas checks to see what kind of difference there was.

Another vote for IMR Trail Boss.

8grs behind a 170gr RNFP cast bullet.

I've also used IMR SR4759 with both 170gr and 150gr cast RNFP's. The SR4759 allows you to push them a little faster if you want but still keeping the recoil, rapport & cost low.
