I'll actually try to answer this.
The .300 WSM can be had in a short action rifle which - all things being equal - will be lighter than it's long action brother. I do not believe that a hunter could make use any ballistic advantage one cartridge might have over the other. Both cartridges can be had in rifles which weigh as little as 6.5 lbs, but in a 6.5 pound rifle I would sooner have an '06.
If you are looking for a target rifle, you should be less concerned about weight, if you are from Nfld, and want to shoot tars - well I'm not sure it would be legal.
