Have been looking at light weight single shot rifles, like the price and reviews for the H&R, but not crazy about the weight. No advantage over a short action remingtion. Would be great to have a light weight short mtn backpack package offered by the single shot action. Can the metal be lightened on these rifles?

CVA just started making a Scout model..
You would probably have to order it as I don't think that there are any in Canada as of yet..
I know the Ellwood Epps carries CVA muzzle loaders so you might try ordering from them..
CVA also makes a heavier switch barrel model called the Apex..
Check out the CVA forum on "greybeardoutdoors"..

The t/c encore rifle system might be a way to go as you can get short barrels for it to keep the overall length down and this should help with weight, or the condenter(?) frame would be even lighter. There is also the baikal single shot that is light and easy to take down (like a single shot shotgun) but the scope mounting system is something to be desired.

Really? I suggest you go to a firearms dealer and handle the 2 rifles side by side. There is a HUGE difference. The H+R handi is so much slimmer, smaller, shorter, lighter and it balances way better in you hands. The paper stats are not to be relied upon for this type of decision. Handis are for sure not heavy guns.

I handled a T/C Encore with a 15" bbl in .500 S&W and that thing was absolutely amazing. And I say that as someone who generally has no use whatsoever for single shots. The fellow who owned it told me he and his wife use if for Bison! I don't know that a rifle like that costs, but light and handy and comfortable and powerful and good looking do make for an appealing package!

"...Can the metal be lightened..." Hi. No. Barrel could be turned down, but that'd cost as much as the rifle.
The H&R 'Survivor' in .308 or .223 is 36" long, 22" bull barrel, high-density polymer pistol grip stock and weighs 6-1/2 lbs. No iron sights, but comes with a rail. Almost too light though. Felt recoil would be considerable. No idea how available they are in Canada.

+1 for the K95, and to that I'll add the Merkel K3 which is available in many calibers and weighs 5.3lbs for the full stock (short barrel) and 5.5lbs for the regular version.
