Lightening a 10/22 compact stock

Where and how is the best way to lighten a 10/22 compact. Barrel channel ? behind but plate? The published weight is 4 1/2 pounds I'd like to get it down to 3 1/2 to 3 3/4. Is this do-able?

You could skeltonize the butt on it. Make it sorta look like a sten loop stock. Don't know what the strength would be like though

well, a shorter sporter weight barrel would be the biggest reduction, especially if it was fluted.

i think the barrel channel will already be carved out on that model...

slim down and re-finish the stock would be an option, shorten the forend, and make a compartment under the butt plate...

what is the purpose of this more specificly? backpacking? survival?

It is for my son (6 years), and wouldn't you know it he shoots left... grrrr I could just imagine what a left hand youth bolt gun would cost...

there is a drop-block single shot youth gun available, but the manufacturer's name escapes me at the moment...

more importantly, is your son's dominant eye left or right? if he's cross-dominant, you may need to get him shooting right handed.

Left eye dominant.

The rifle itself would probably be where the weight is. Would the stock even weigh a pound? Doesn't make a good bat.

I found the H&R sportster compact, break action it still weighs over five pound though...
