Don't some of you guys find it funny to hear or read of people buying a certain ring or scope just because it is a couple ounces lighter then the next,even a rifle for that fact. I always here that Elite 4200's are sooo much heavier then say Leupold or Zeiss or that the Talley rings are so light. Is a few ounces really going to make that big a diff on a hunt? Maybe go on a diet a drop 10 pounds before a hunt, wouldnt that make things a little easier on yourself and pocket book?
I can understand if a product is functions better but the issue of weight..I just have to shake my head on, especially when the guy who you're talking to about it is 50 lbs over weight.
What are your fellows thoughts??

..and many of the guns sit in a truck or in a quad rack until shooting time comes. But I think the guys who walk alot or hike into the mountains tend to really watch what they have for gear and its weight.

But to buy something because of a couple ounces??? Take a leak. There's the difference.
 
I think you will find the guys who really work to drop gear weight do not shine their pants on a truck seat. :rolleyes:

They also hunt real estate where you can travel more vertical distance than horizontal. At the end of a day where you have climbed a combined total of 10 or 12 thousand vertical feet you are ready to cut the handle off of your toothbrush to save half an ounce. Unless you have experienced mountain hunting on foot you have no idea how much work it is.

Sitting on the edge of an agricultural field waiting for a whitetail to come out and feed at your bait pile in Saskatchewan is a totally different than hunting sheep, goats or high country mulies in BC.
 
Saw an American at the rifle range here last year.
Rem 700 Ti, Talleys, lightweight Leupold. Nice rig.
He thought it was quite the sheep killing machine

He was about 5'6" and probably pushing 350lbs.:D

I've got a buddy here that has 4 or 5 +40" sheep taken here.
His rifle.....Old Ruger 77 Varmint in 25-06 w/ a 10x Bushnell.
No tent or bag. One change of clothes. Lots of Powerbars.

The option of buying light is great but I suspect 99% of hunters don't really need it.
But whatever floats yer boat
 
Im 25 lbs overweight, and most of my guns weigh 8-8.5 lbs, except for my 6 lb Ti 260. I wouldnt put a Burris one piece base and steel rings on it, and a 4200 4-16x50 - it'd wreck the balance of such a light gun.

Yes thats right, Saskatchewan guys hunt nothing else other then whitetails in their trucks over bait piles.:rolleyes:
 
I have light and standard weight rigs. I like my larger calibre rifles to weigh about 8.5 lbs scoped, it's a comfprtable weight for me to carry longterm, but heavy enough to tame recoil. In my short action lightweight Kimber I have a Nikon 6x in lightweight rings and bases.

To me it's about balance.
 
Don't forget that a lighter scope/mount combo has less inertia, and therefore less chance of damage on a gun with heavy recoil.

Not really but I do find it Funny that some Folks really seem to get all worked up worrying about what others do or choose to use ? Who gives a crap ?:rolleyes:

I now primarily use a Rem Ti and actually just aquired a VX II Ultralight scope for it.......No it's not just a little lighter then the average rifle scope combo..it's alot lighter;)
This entire package now weighs in at 6 lbs even including the sling..........necessary ? Maybe not but alot of the areas I now hunt are very steep, not exactly Truck accessible, when doing so I choose to carry a compact Rifle of 6 lbs instead of 10 or even more.

My Money, my choice.....Happy Hunting:wave:
 
the lighter my rifles get, the more I like them :D

I'll keep counting ounces, and keep smiling.

you have a problem with light rifles. thats nice.

the flatness of sask makes me want to vomit. and deer do nothing for me.

Deer do nothing for you because you don't have the skill man, whitetails are king.
As for Saskatchewan making you vomit (getting old), well thats fine... nobody in Sask or CGN for that matter really likes you anyway, go hide in your cave in the mountains.

Well.............It can be said that alot of Winchesters success with the Model 94 Model can be attributed to it's reputation as a LIGHT & quick handling rifle for it's day. Seems enough have been sold to show Hunters appreciate this:)

Geez somebody thought it was a Novel concept over a hundred years ago...Imagine that ;)

I actually do notice and can appreciate a light rig. My .257 Weatherby topped with 4-12 x 40 Elite 3200 is a bit of a pig although shoots like a laser out to 400. I am just unsure how often i will want to carry it and for what distances when on the hoof.

If your worrying about a pound here or there the rest of us should consider carrying short pointy styrofoam noodles.:D
