Ok for whatever reason, lately I've had a fascination with trying for compact light rifles, takedowns, etc.

So I got to thinking about building a super lightweight 10/22, keeping it non-restricted of course. What's the point in having a rifle you can carry on your back for days, if you can't actually carry it on your back?

Anyway the best factory offering is the compact at 4.5 pounds. If I could get down to 3 and meet (barely) OAL requirements it'd be perfect.

Ideas please.

How about a short carbon fibre barrel ?

Never even thought of those barrels! Damn things are pricey though. Thanks for the heads up.

Just an idea, check out henry survival rifle. AR-7 non-restricted and 2.5 pounds. Plus everything fits in the stock!

I thought about those, but I have this habit of not being satisfied with factory stuff. Thats why I wanted to build a 10/22. Common sense says get the Henry. My wallet says get the Henry. But my tinkering habit says build your own. That same damn habit forced me to build and drive every day a 12 second nitrous fed 2006 Silverado. And a few other projects, vehicles, guns, knives etc.

Just a question, have you even checked out all the upgrades/ aftermarket parts for the AR-7?
Some of them are awesome. I heard there is a 9mm centerfire upgrade.
Anyway you wanted light, when I read this, I thought of the 2.5 pound henry!

Don't AR-7 suffer from marginal accuracy because of the way they break down/assemble together? I think I read that somewhere. Anyone have any first hand accounts of its accuracy?

They're also finicky. I'm gonna go handle one just to see what they're like. I'm not so much after a survival rifle. Honestly it's just something to take along on backpacking/camping trips to sit and plink at empties with. I'm in southern Ontario. I seriously seriously doubt I'd ever need a "survival" rifle.

10/22 carbine w/ Dlask 12.5" factory taper barrel, skeletonize the buttstock and mount a trs-25 on the factory rail. Maybe even hog out the forend, leaving a little support under the barrel band. Sling it with poly swivels and a butler creek 1" strap. You could even remove the wood that stick out past the barrel band and have Dlask finish 1/2" past that with no thread. Or saw the forend right down and run an 8" tapered barrel. This will keep you just over 26" with factory stock and should be insanely lightweight.

I built this folder a few years back with a Green Mountain Aero Barrel.
Super light and compact....
