Well I have come to realize the reality that I cannot seriously take my heavy barreled tactical .308 stalking in the bush for 12hours straight and expect to make an accurate standing shot with it.

So it has led me to seek a simple but lightweight hunting rifle for standing shooting while keeping my .308 for hides and stands.

I am leaning towards a remington 700 of some sort, but if I can affort it another company so long as it isn't that heavy. The last trip I carried an uncle's 250 ackley in a regular barreled remington 700. It was light and made a big difference.

but before I think about calibre, which is an entirely different topic alone, I want to find a some good choices of rifles that are good for carrying held or slinged for a long period of time and is light enough to work towards a more steady standing shot either sling supported or not.

I wouldn't be able to affort a gun right now anyway Levi, but at this point I want to find the right one, so I know what I am saving up for.

I know, I know

Before you pack your .308 away for good, have you tried one of those shock absorbing slings? They really do make a difference and will hold you over till you find a light weight gun.

For an inexpensive hunting rifle in excellent condition why not stick with a 98 Mauser action?

You can pick up a husqvarna 1600 lightweight for $400 in top notch condition.
Here is pic of my 1600 Husky in .30-06. These are small ring 98 mausers.

Lightweight version of the 1640 Standard, made from 1954 to 1967 in .243Win, 6,5x55, .270Win, .30-06 and 9,3x62. The barrel was 52cm (20,5") long and was fitted with a sight adjustable for 100, 200 and 300 meters. Weight was 2,9 kg (6,4 lb). The walnut stock was of the narrow forend schnabel tip type. This is in my opinion the most interesting rifle of the 1640 series. A very handy and well made rifle.

Features commercial bolt sleeve, side safety and hinged floorplate.

Contact aacollectible if you're interested in these rifles. He has a bunch for sale

Stevens 200

My vote for the combo you mentioned with a moderate price and light weight is the Stevens 200, and they are chambered in 30-06.FS

I have a T-3, and they are quite nice to pack around all day. I put about 50 kms on my boots antelope hunting last week and the rifle didn't feel bad at all.
