Lightning up trigger on Winchester 70

I have a FN Winchester 70 in 30-06 which I adore. I plan to use it as my go to hunting rifle (hopefully to be broken in on my first deer trip in three weeks!).

It fits me beautifully and shoots really well but the one thing I dislike about it is after owning a number of other target rifles I find the trigger WAY too heavy. I think it sits somewhere around 3.5 or 3 lbs. Is there any way to lighten the trigger a bit without any other negatives.

I'm pondering selling it and going to a Sako with a set trigger for this reason alone. I'd much rather not as I do like this rifle a lot, just would prefer a bit lighter trigger.

Any thoughts?
 
I think you should reflect until you've had your first shot at a deer. Having too light of a trigger is a liability when your adrenalin is running, and your fingers are cold. 3-4 pounds is about right .

Excellent point. Definitely not considering doing anything different until after the trip. You are probably right, might be just right.
 
Ernie the Gunsmith has two lighter springs available, hunting and target. He doesn't ship to Canada, but you may still find this information useful. I did.
 
You have made as much adjustment as you can on it? I found that to make it not to bad....if you can find a spring from Ernie the Gunsmith it works good to...I managed to find one for my Super Grade and it made the trigger really nice! But I havent been lucky this time to find one for my 30-06....

YOu can pick up a Timney Trigger for less that it would cost you to goto a Sako as well....they are about $125 I think
 
Add cold gloved hands, high adrenalin and you won't feel the first 5lbs of pull on the trigger. However, add thick gloves, cold hands and adrenalin that 3-3.5 lbs may be a little on the light side.
 
I have three of the newer M-70's and have adjusted all three, once you try setting them below 3 Ibs. the mechanism does not work right. Mine all break real nice between 3.25 and 3.5 Ibs. As others have mentioned for hunting purposes the pull is set about right at 3.5. When you shoot your deer there are two things you will not notice, the recoil and the trigger pull as you will be concentrating on the deer and the adrenalin will be flowing.
