Sounds like an oxymoron I know

I am starting to gather parts for my next long term build. it took me over 2.5 years to get my 260AI build done. So with another level of patience I am starting my next project.

I am building a larger caliber hunting/target hybrid rifle. I call it hybrid because my plan is to develop a rifle that is made to be able to shoot precision out past 1000yds but be light enough to carry medium to far distances for hunting so as to set up in remote areas, etc without too much fatigue.

So far it is looking like.

Pierce Engineering Titanium Rem700LA Magnum bolt face receiver: Ordered

Proof Research carbon fibre barrel: Thinking 24" at this time, but still undecided. I will be putting a brake on it so that will affect my decision as overall barrel length will be something to consider.

Either the XLR Tac Lite Carbon or Eberlestock Cobra Chassis. Both are in the 4lb area and I like the looks of them. I do like the ability to make the XLR into a folder though. Both cost about the same in the mid 900$ USD mark.

Scope and Trigger choices can come later.

Right now I am going with 300WinMag based on experience with the round.

Cgn'r "ivo" built pretty much the exact gun you are collecting the parts for. His was chambered in 6SLR. He continued the lightweight theme by adding Murphy titanium rings and base. Helluva nice gun! Maybe he'll post some pics for you.

OOh Ti Rings.

I am getting a Ti Base with the Pierce, I will look into these rings.. Something to add to the wishlist, thanks!

Does anyone make a Ti Brake?

Not that I can speak from experience, but the idea of using a carbon fiber wrapped barrel for a target rifle doesn't sit well with me. I like the idea for a 1 or 2 shot type hunting rig.
There are too many threads and too many reports on the hide and longrangehunting about the carbon separating from the liner and similar issues for me to use one on a target rifle.
I know that the carbon is advertised as having the ability to cool faster than a steel barrel, generally that is not true. It acts as more of an insulator, lets the barrel liner get good and hot but you'll never feel it through the carbon. Which if all you ever do is measure the outside temperature of the barrel (carbon wrap) it will never get hot, and will seem like it dissipated the heat really quickly.
I am a huge fan of composites, and as a hunting rig, or even a very lightly used, very slowly fired target gun I would think it would work just great.

Thanks for those points. I am a slow firing target shooter and with a larger calibre gun it I will probably be even slower. For me I don't shot competitively so my long range target shooting is purely for leisure so I take my sweet time.

The barrel is one of the biggest contributors to weight so I will stick with the plan to use one but will incorporate your points when it comes to using.

Right now I'm looking at proof research for the bbl maker and I do know that ATRS can bring them in.

I will be at SHOT in Jan so I will be speaking to the reps of many of the companies that make bbls, stocks, etc.

You don't need to worry about the carbon separating on the barrel from proof research, they are very well made. I miss the 223 I sold already. You don't need to worry about rapid fire either. With mine, the groups tightened up with increased rate of fire. These things are designed for military application on mini guns. Much more punishment than your average bolt gun.

I need to pick a barrel length

It will have a brake so that will factor into my overall length desires.

I do not want a super long barrel as I intend to carry it to some degree.

At this time I am somwhere between 20",22", and 24" - Then add 3" or so for a brake.

I've got a lot of paying off to do before I move to the next stage..

So Far I have

Pierce Ti Action (700LA w/ magnum bolt face)
Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50
SPUHR Medium mount.

Next will be the whole barrel fitting with ATRS. I have just under 4000$ I need to pay off first.

What about the watch,? LOL :) Good Luck sounds like a nice build. I use Spuhr rings and they are "top shelf".

have a look at how much "muzzle" the proof research barrel will give you. Yes, they put on muzzle brakes but I am not sure how close you will be to the CF when it is all done.

Sounds like an interesting build.

Enjoy...

Yea. I have seen plenty of rifles while researching it with brakes on. I have come across many that have been in 300winmag as well and they all have brakes installed. I know it can be done but true that my choices may be limited based on brake threading depth.

IMHO long range rifle with 300WM barrel less than 24" in lenght is just silly. Good "artilery" style brake shouldn't be longer than 2" as well.
One more thing, 300WM has very short neck and IMO handloaded ammo is less concentric than say 308 Norma magnum.
Long range shooters prefer 308/338WM for that reason alone (Mick McPhee for instance)
In your case I would use all available magazine lenght (Rem mod 700 LA) and chamber the rifle in 300 Wby.
GR8 2c worth....
