Lets see photos and specs of your lightweight hunting rifles.

I'm am going to re-visit my desire for a backpacking lightweight rifle. I am going for somthing with a lot of Jam and light. I don't care about recoil or muzzle jump issues, I'm a big boy. If they made a Remington mountain rifle in 300 wsm then I'd be all over that. Not really turned on by remington SAUM though. I'll go stainless for ease of maintenance while hunting, laminate or synthetic doesn't matter but I'm sure synthetic is usually lighter.
The browning titanium 300wsm would fit the bill perfectly but $1800 is a little steep right now:eek: Maybe if I sell my truck:cool:

Thanks

Look at a T3 Lite in 300WSM. Its only a bit heavier at 6 1/2 lbs and it still has a barrel over 24" long. It's nicely balanced unlike the Mountain Rifle which has a pencil thin barrel that makes it rear heavy.

At under $700, its a good value. A bit more if you go stainless but still a great value.

Here is mine, a Browning Ti in 300 WSM, I am loving this gun, 6 3/4 all ready to go with a 3x9, sure makes a difference carrying a gun this light all day. the stickiness of the stock is a great option, and it shoots 3 different factory loads in 1" groups,

This rifle will be with me for a long time.

BSA Imperial Featherweight in 338-06

Under 7 pounds dry with 24" barrel.

Using the 225 grain Accubond @ 2800 fps it has a Point Blank range on 10" diameter target of 330 yards and hits 500 yards still packing 1875 ft/lbs of energy.

If you want serious boom in a lightweight rifle, then consider the Remington Custom KS Mountain Rifle in .375 H&H Mag. Other heavy hitters include .300 mag in winchester, Wby and and RUM versions, .338 in WM and RUM or if you want to be different then 8mm RM. These rifles have 26" barrels, are epoxy bedded and have factory work done to their triggers and actions. They are far more than a plain 700 with a kevlar stock. They weigh in at 6 3/4lbs (7lbs for RUM calibers). Add a set of talley one piece ultralightweight mounts and a Leupold 3-9X Compact and you are set. A 7 1/2 lbs (ready to go) .375 H&H would be something else.

If you want to go the WSM route then why not a Winchester Classic Featherweight with an ultralight stock; MPI, Wildcat or Brown Precision make versions that will easily shave .75lbs off the standard rifle.

Here is my Mtn Rifle:

Rem 700 SA w/turned down shroud, fluted bolt, skeletonized handle, trued and then Elecroless Nickel Plated (stuff is bombproof).

22" Gaillard 1:9 Stainless .550" muzzle (Rem Mtn contour)

Wildcat Model 7 Stock inletted for a rem 700

Mtn001.jpg

Leupold 2-7x33 VXII

Now wears Talley LW rings (pictured w/Burris Zee Rings)

Pushes a 140gr pill @ 3000fps (3030fps w/140 Accubonds and NP's, a few fps less with 140 BT's). It groups the AB's better than the pictured group, and NP's consistently into 1/2"... usually less.

'Boo, I feel sorry for the guy that has to shoot that thing. I have one in 30-06 with a muzzle break. It looks like yours has been rebarreled, correct?

Yes, It now wears a Bevan King SS barrel that has been teflon coated.

The recoil from the 338-06 is more like a shotgun shooting slugs than a heavy "magnum" It give a very solid "push" compared to the sharp rap most of the belted magnums produce. With that said about 6 225 grain rounds off the bench is my limit at one sitting. 250 grains are limited to a single 3 shot group! LoL

Holly crapola guys

Nice Mountain Irons. I am having an idea!!!

I have a Remington BDL in 7mm mag that I picked up at a "can't say no" price the thing shoots awesome and is in great shape. I've had it over a year and it just sits in the cabinet. Unfortunatly its blued !!!

That electrolosis nickle plating sure looks like the cats ass. Can I get this done to a whole blued rifle? Whats it worth and who does it?

If I can I would think about a lightweight fiberglas stock, flute the barrel and bolt, skeleton the bolt handle, lightweight talleys. I wonder what this would weigh?

I also have a Remington mountain rifle DM in 25-06 but I want something with more bang.

Again, awesome stuff guys, keep em coming

I have two:
Rem 700 Ti powder coated matte black and fluted in 7mm saum 6lbs plus rings bases and scope.
saum3.jpg

7mm.jpg

Sako Finnlight 7mm rem mag.
Neither are the lightest rigs out there...the Finnlight is 7 1/4 lbs plus r&b's and scope.

My mountain rifle is a Husqvarna Husky in .358 Norma Magnum. Built about 1963, weighs under eight pounds all up, straight off the rack. When I get old enough that eight pounds is too much for me to pack, I guess I'll give up hunting and take up golf.

I just picked it up off another forum couple weeks ago. It's been shortened and has a Decellerator pad installed at 13" LOP. Barrel is Magna-Ported....rings and bases are nothing special...standard Redfield type one piece with steel rings. If I go to Talley Lightweights I can probably drop a few ounces....I bought it with the intention of a rebarrel project...but I kinda like it the way it is...:D

I could post a pic tomorrow.....

Got pictures:)
