Lightweight hunting rifles

KS Arms in Edmonton does helical bolt fluting.....and just about all other rifle work..

RickF....I like that 280AI of yours...mine is similiar and came in at exactly 8 pounds with standard Remington contour tube, at 24", fluted, in a Brown Precisin ADL style stock and a 3-9X Leo in Dual Dovetails

Rembo, thanks. Still recycling that Brown ADL, huh? Nice stock to be sure. Would I recognize that 3-9?

I think you'll like this 280AI. We talked a while back about a bit of work on it if you are still interested. When the time is right I'll send out the entire rifle so you can handle and shoot it a bit, and see how you like the lighter rifles.

Yup,..the Brown Precision has seen duty on the original 7Mag that it left the Remington factory with, the 35 Whelen last season and now on the 280AI, where it will likely stay. I plan to have "cccan" put the BDL bottom metal in and repaint it this winter.

look forward to checking out your 280AI...my partner says he's "likey" going to Mexico in Jan,...there could be some serious 'smithing going on while he's away:D ......he sorta frowns on it so I try and keep him happy...afterall, he's the one with signing authority at the bank:) but he just tossed a brochure at me about a 24"x12"x18" #40 Taper Machining Center..."do we need one?"..he says.....looks like the perfect 'smithing machine....:D :) ....I said....I suppose we could find a job to do with it..if we have to:D

My lightweight hunting rifle is a 1903 springfield chambered for 358 norma,22 inch tube turned down to a winchester featherweight conture .560 at the muzzle. In a MPI fiberglass stock Seeadler 3x9 scope.whole rig weighs 7 1/2 lbs

Sounds like a hell of an all-around rifle for your neck of the woods. My 358 Norma weighs 8 pounds, 5 oz and is a handful off the bench. How is that little beast to shoot?

All I can say is you don't want to creep up on the scope.:p Its a boring rifle it just holds its zero from year to year.Take it to the range shoot a couple off the bench and go hunting.I have owned it for over thirty years so you get used to the recoil.

I forgot to tell you about my lightweight rifle.

It is a Model 96 Mauser - that is model 1996 - straight pull in .300 Win Mag. I don't have a scale, but the owner's manual says 6.25lbs. It has a 24" barrel and uses Remington 700 bases and rings made by leupold. Right now it is wearing a Swarovski 3-9x36 Habicht, but it usually has a 3-9x33 Leupold compact. I guess with the compact it should be right around 7lbs, or just under. With 220gr Nosler Partitions at 2858fps it gets your attention when you pull the trigger! Dennis Sorensen put a decelerator on it for me and now it is much better, although still not pleasant. I'll get pics up at a later date, my camera is buggered.

Rick,

He's not kidding. I was with him when he shot it for the first time this year. Took it out of the case, put two shots lesss than 3/4 inch apart, exactly three inches high.

He just put it back in the case and started shooting his 223.

It is a mittfull off the bench. He's not kidding about that either! :)

My mountain rifle is a fine old Husqvarna 7X57 that weighs just on seven pounds with scope, five rounds of ammo and a sling.

All original except for the stock, a 19 ounce Brown Precision that I got from Rick F, a couple of years ago. One of the smarter things I have done around here. Thanks again, Rick! ;)

you might want to consider the ruger m77 which i believe is offered in 300wsm and has the option of a forward mounted scope, which takes awhile to get used to but once you are target accusition is very fast, as well as being a very solid rifle as well

No offence but I don't care for Rugers much. I have seen too many of them not shoot well, and only a few that do. In all fairness these were all M77 not the M77 mkII, but the damage has been done.

Here is my lightweight mountain rifle....
Leeper built .284 Win on a Winchester M70 action. 23" Pac-Nor Stainless Match bbl, Bansner Stock, Leupold Quick-Release rings, shaved trigger guard/floorplate. This gun is a sweet shooter as RickF and RobP know.....only one pic right now. I have a Silver Leupold VXII 3-9x40 on it right now. Not sure the weight of it at the moment but its a nice handling gun and is nicely balanced....

"lightweight" rifles

I currently(!) have 4 rifles that are all 8lbs and under ( unloaded). For myself, I'm not sure I could do my best ( if there is such a thing while hunting!) work with a very light rifle (some of the 5-6 lb jobs). I won't pack a heavy gun any more, 8lbs is about my comfortable limit.
Lightest one I have is a model 70 fwt 30-06 w/Conetrol rings and a VXll 2x7 that weighs 7lb 8oz.
Also have a 700 mtn rifle in 280 Remington, leupold rings, Varix lll 3.5x10, that goes 7lb14oz.
Another 700, a stainless 257 Roberts in a Walnut Classic stock, with Talley lightweights and a vxll 3x9, that goes7lb 15oz.
Last one (currently) is a FN 35 whelen, Bansner stock, Weaver rings, varix 111 1.5x5, that goes 8lbs (maybe an ounce less).
All are steady (for me) for offhand shooting, and all have 22" barrels. (nice and handy, plus works well with my short legs!).
