lightweight rifle for a leftie

I'm a lefty and my light weight rifle is a Savage 99F in 300 savage. (6.5 lbs) You can find them in 308, 243 and if you are really lucky 358.

not a magnum and i will prefer short action to cut weight ... i know Dan a Tikka is close to all and far from my request lol ....

Cheers :)

A friend needed a recommendation for a left handed rifle.

He wanted:

Stainless
Light
Magazine fed
Available (this was the kicker!)

Wound up a contest between Savage and Tikka, and tikka won on weight. Ruger was in the mix, too, but lost on weight and magazine.

Doesn't hurt that I'm a tikka fan! :)

OK, well... have been looking for a friend of mine as well...

They are as rare as hen's teeth but you can get a Ruger compact M77 Hawkeye in synthetic stainless left hand.... You may have to find one in the states or talk with Clay at Profit River, but they are out there..... I just bought a compact laminate in .243 and it is a 6 pound rifle in a short action.... I ordered a Zeiss Terra to top mine, but you can get a Leupold VX2 ultralight in 2-7 or 3-9 and still come out under 7 pounds....

guys i want to hear about left hand ruger 77 short action in synthetic stock ..... show me the goodie.

They do not exist, at least as a factory offering.

Good luck Sir. You'll be lucky to hit all of your points in a factory gun. Maybe try to find a old stock Forbes? Or order MRC's lightest possible configuration?

I don't know much about much, but as a southpaw shooter, I have followed factory left-hand bolt-action SS offerings very closely for quite a few years. Have imported some very rare LH Rugers up from the US... But have never- never - seen a LH SS Synthetic Stocked M77 MII or Hawkeye as a factory offering from Ruger. Not in any chambering. Let alone a 'Compact' model... They haven't been made. Ruger has made many limited runs for lefthanded shooters, especially Hawkeyes, some in SS, but all have been stocked in the grey laminate. Including the Scout Rifles in 308 and 223.

If you could point me to a Factory LH SS SA Synthetic M77 Hawkeye, any short-action chambering, I'd gladly eat crow and purchase it immediately, with thanks...

Phil,

Would you consider a build, or only interested in factory rifles?

I have a couple LH M70s I've had built that ended up pretty light, and LA SS actions can be had for a price. Or a MRC action? A M700 would be easier to find and get nice and light tho...

You far outweigh my knowledege of leftie rifles.... but what I do know is that they are not offered as standard fare.....

some searches in the states show me there are limited runs of the compacts, synthetics and hawkeyes in general.....As stated earlier, I am searching for a 243 for a friend as well... I havent found one, but I know they are out there......

i am all ears and listening.

a lh70 in sa action i had a 300 wsm that i sold a few years ago, still have a fwt stock that was supposed to go on a 350 rem mag from mrc action.

so why not a mrc action or even the complete rifle but they are little on the heavy side, no?

yep seems another option can be a rem700 Sa ... not my best choice but seems it may be a good option.

What's your budget, Sir? Is a NULA out of reach? Maybe the less costly factory version of the NULA, Forbes Rifles, would be an option? The company has shut down, from what I understand, but old stock may be available somewhere?

M99 does start out heavy, much like a M70. But it can be made into a fairly light rifle. MRC claims 6 pounds, 2 ounces for their SA High Country line.. Lots of light bits and pieces available for M70 and clones. My LA McM stocked FW comes in at 6.5 pounds bare, with all steel parts, no plastic or aluminum. It'll never be a Kimber Montana or NULA, but we afflicted must take what we can get... ;)

M700 would be a lot easier to build a true lightweight out of. But like you, not my first choice either...
