What's the letter prefix, D or E? The barrel date is on the left hand side of the barrel under the rear handguard. Just trying to establish if it was assembled with recoil pads or not. Serial number should indicate but its not definitive because many were later fitted when rifles were returned to stores.

Your Aussie friend is correct, Lithgow small arms factory rifle manufacturing machinery was supplied by Pratt & Whitney , a higher grade of steel could be machined at closer tolerances,

I just found the serial number along with a WD broad arrow on the stock. Its on the bottom of the fore stock.

Yes all lithhows were serial numbered on the underside of the forstock. You never mentioned the letter prefix. No matter, it would be wise to check if it has copper plates installed if you want to shoot it. You may be able to see them without removing the stock if you know what to look for.
