Likelyhood of problems getting .308 ammo?

I was buying ammo and talking to the guy at the local large gun store and he said someone bought all the federal .308 they had in the store and in their warehouse. He then was saying the US government was not allowing export of 7.62 and other rounds and of course that factories are too busy filling military contracts.

Now I did do a search and yes there are other threads about ammo shortages, but they mostly have to do with .223. What is the feeling about the supply of .308 ammo (cheap & match)??? Is it time to freak out or just know that the price will be going up regularly, but that the supply is safe?

(I know I know get into loading my own, I want to work on learning to shoot and not on making bullets right now)

If you want to work on learning to shoot, .308 is an expensive choice of caliber, even if you are reloading.
Additionally, I don't understand the reservations of combining the two.
I would highly recommend diving in on reloading as well. Once you are making ammo, it is fairly straight forward.
 
.308 match rounds are a little tricky to come by, but definately not impossible. It's almost like feast or famine with that stuff. I would definately recommend when it's a feast to fill your belly because it may be awhile before the next feeding. Also, by buying a whole case at one time you get the same lot so you don't have to worry about re-zeroing your rifle. And always keep your brass, someday you will want to reload. Anyways, that's my 2 cents.
 
308 ammo shortage, well, tell me how much new 308 brass do you see on any retailers shelves right now? Tough to reload with out brass. FS

Well when I say "learn to shoot" I mean improving my precision shooting, I do know how to point and shoot :p . .308 ammo is expensive and I may have to get into it quicker than I thought. However, I live in a small apartment right now and would have to do it out on the parents farm when I can get there.... :rolleyes:
 
Lapua Brass, 8lbs of Varget, Match Bullets and CCI BR primers = Loads tailored to your rifle and a hell of alot more fun than buying a case :D
 
I just bought 560 rds of .308 SA milsurp from Districorp in Mtl. It's out there, you just have to look.

Have you called Wolverine or Marstar?

I've been getting the same story from gun stores as well, that all current production is going to the war effort, etc.

Personally, I think that's BS as if you look around, there's lots to be had. Prices are going up though, which sucks.

I've been told to avoid the Indian surplus stuff that's available in the US.

I don't think this would be considered match grade by any stretch of the imagination, but if you're looking for brass... It might be an option for you.

Reloading doesn't take a lot of room. When I had my condo I would c-clamp a block of wood with my press on it to a foldable workmate bench, worked like a charm. Everything would stash away in a closet when I wasn't using it.

I usually look when I'm in stores and they never have any. Today I was in Wholesale Sports in Winnipeg and they actually had a couple of bags out.

Again, .308 is closing in on double what .223 will cost you.
.223 is an excellent cartridge to start, and handloading match quality ammo for it can be less than half of what you spend on factory ammo.
I've only been handloading for 4-5 years -I wish someone would have kicked me in the ass long before that...

I tried reloading and it was not for me. Way too time consuming, if I had the time maybe. The high quality match ammo available is just as good. I have had better results with factory match ammo.

if you are using Lapua brass in your M14 man you bucket a pile cash to burn on average a case can only be reloaded and fired 5 times thru an M14 before it scrap.Ie out of spec
