I just threw a small sized Limbsaver slip-on pad on my Hogue 12" LOP stocked 870 and I'm happy with the difference its made. My one complaint about the Hogue shorty stock was the rather small and hard pad it came with, I figured a slip-on was the easiest way to fix that and it did. While there's now about a 1" increase in length it's not enough to cause me any kind of problem.

I still have to take it out shooting but at this point I figure that even 3" loads will be more shoulder friendly to shoot than regular strength 2.75" were before, as was the case on my last Limbsaver fitted stock.

I've never seen the Hogue stock for an 870 but I have one on my Ruger .35 Whelen. I'm suprised that you say that the recoil pad is small and hard, the one on my rifle stock is thick and very "squishee". It really takes a bite out of recoil.

Assuming it's the same hardness, it might be alright for .35 rifle work but it's a bit too hard for shooting full power 12 guage buck and slugs by the caseload as I sometimes do, plus its a shorter stock so the pad's "footprint" is smaller.
