Hey folks,

I was researching getting a brake for my .308 and came across these. I will be hunting with my precision rig and don't want to lose my hearing in the process from a normal brake so the next best thing seems to be a linear muzzle brake/comp. Anyone have experience with these? I am curious about felt recoil and bullet stabilization. And for those of you that are Albertan, anyone know where I can get one in the province?

Thank you guys for your time

They don't do a lot but they do have a slight effect. Varies with every setup/brake/cal. Muzzle blast is usually reduced a little but not to the point of removing hearing protection (I don't wear earpro when hunting either) muzzle flip is usually reduced to a small degree. They do not thump like a side discharge brake or comp but do not compete with any type of sound suppressor either. I've used S&J's nano comp, Dlask's modified Levang, a friend has a Griffin linear comp. The S&J was on a 16.5" Ruger Scout in .223 and was more for looks. It was slightly quieter than the factory flash hider and much quieter than a large single baffle brake. The Levang was on a 16.5" .22lr and made it possible to shoot without earpro, 16.5" is where I find I like earpro with my CCI Blazers. The Griffin is on Ravage's Tavor so hard to compare it to a boltgun. It has ports in the top but is nicer to sit beside than an A2. I can't remember if he had a flashcomp on his Tavor for a while but he has a 7.62 flashcomp on his 16.5" .308 and its a thumper. Feels like a .30-06 or .300WM as far as blast goes. Compared to the A2 FH that came on it, it is very loud. Hopefully that kind of puts things into perspective for you. For hunting I would choose between a linear comp or pronged flash hider. If the budget allows and you really want a real brake for range use, blast shields are the new wave in muzzle devices with every company spitting out a "me too" product atleast once a month. They'll turn a hard thumping baffle or port brake/comp into a linear comp using a suppressor style attachment for QD install/removal.

That was very informative, thank you supernova. Sounds like I might want a brake with a blast shield. Gotta save up :p . I think I will get the one from grizzly gun works that comes with the redirector and support our Canadian economy/firearms industry.

Try high quality electronic hearing protection. Protects your ears, and can enhance other sounds while hunting.

This. Squirrels sound like moose crashing through the bush when you crank them. Buy once, cry once. Peltor or MSA Sordins with gel ear cups and you won't mind wearing them all day.

^This. Peltor Soundtrap or MSA Sordin. Your hearing is precious and I hear better with my Sountraps on while hunting than without them.

Yeah my side discharge brake I ordered on my 6.5CM Modern Hunter is going to be noisy. I will look at one of these blast shields later. My 308 barrel will be for bush hunting. Smaller one is for tactical and range work.
