Husky M98 9.3x62 with 286gr Norma RN/SP driven by a dose of RL15. Not the Smith though.

Failing that, it'll be the Stevens 30-06. That said, moose has been open for 2 weeks here.

I do have to say that I sure like bcsteve's Ruger. Nice rig.

My boy has a draw tag for #24 this year. Just to humor dad, he has agreed to park his Mark V .257 and use my Gaillard barrelled Mark V ultra-lightweight now chambered in .300 Win mag. It's got a 3.5-10 x50 VXL-3 with illuminated B&C, and a love affair going with 168 TSXs.
These are the not so elusive prairie moose, getting the tag is the hard part.

Damn, I can't decide. Either the Sako 85 finnlight .30-06 with a vx3 2.5-8 shooting 168 TSX OR the Sako 75 finnlight .308 with VX3 2.5-8 CDS shooting 165 IB's. Got 2 weeks left to choose...

I wish I had to debate as to what MacMillan stocked, late model, stainless Sako I had to carry :(

Wow, you guys must be pretty new at moose hunting. I'm going on 50 and have yet to shoot a moose at more than 120 yards, usually less than 60. If I don't have my old 1970s Win mod 70/30.06 with 3 power scope, then I'll likely be using something old with iron sights like my Mosin 91/30.

All the power to you and each to their own, but 500 yards, Really? For moose? A 12G slug with no sights works pretty good.

For what it's worth my Father has 7 Moose under his belt falling from his Model 1917 (P17) Eddystone .30-06 in full, original wood stock. He's shot 2 bull's since then with a Ruger MKII stainless and is debating going back to the M1917.....

I'll likely try my Remington 700 CDL in 300 Win mag [180 Partitions at 3125 fps] or possibly my PH Model 81 Classic in 308 Norma Mag [200 AB at 2940 fps] If I see a legal one, he's in the freezer. Eagleye.

My grandfather will be carrying his Voere .308 NM for something like....the 40th year in a row? :p good taste...

I can't decide. I'm only going to be hunting calves so probably my 1886 in .33 WCF or my new (got it today) CZ550 FS .270 Win. I also have a CZ 550 Medium 9.3 x 62 that I may consider.

I have a few years on you fiddler, and I have shot moose from 15 feet right out to 500+ yards. I have actually shot 7 moose on the far side of 450, and another dozen at 300+ You see, we have these things called clear-cuts here. Logging slash with no cover to sneak in close on a moose. Sometimes it is just better to take him where he stands than risk spooking him and losing your chance. While a moose is not very good at spotting a stationary hunter. Moving objects are easy for him to see, and if he is nervous already, he will be gone. That is why I use a flat shooting chambering most often when shooting moose. Certain areas, though, allow the use of less powerful rifles. Regards, Eagleye
