Trying to figure out a little bit about this guy...

image_zps47d8dc4a.jpg

Head stamp has hhW st* 17 44, in order from 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock position. Appears steel cased, lacquer finish with a blue ring between the primer and the casing.

Trying to figure out country of origin. Google fu has been weak on this one.

I think what you have there (people more knowledgeable correct me if I am wrong) is 1944 manufactured German 8mm Mauser ammo. The blue ring around the primer means that it is steel cored ball ammo.
Hope this helps or at least allows you to use your google fu to more effect.

Your 7.92 Mauser ammo was made by Metallwerke Silberhütte G.m.b.H., St. Andreasberg i/Harz, Germany. As wartime ammo, corners were cut and the inside of those cases was not treated with any anti-corrosive. It is generally suggested to avoid shooting any as they cases are brittle and might have significant internal rust. I would pull a bullet or two to see what the state of the powder is.

Interesting. The ammunition externally is in great shape. Looking at the outside, it all looks brand new and I never would have anticipated that.
