Maybe I'm dense, honestly it wouldn't be the first time.
Ordered a Leupold M70 short action rail with 20moa, leupold web says nothing about "only fits post 2001 rifles". Shop I ordered from also just copied pasted Leupold verbiage. Get the rail, apparently the short action pre 2001 are much shorter action, no where near close to fitting.
So reaching out to see what 20moa rail I can track down that will fit a mid 90's push feed M70 Heavy Varmint?

Winchester M70 Heavy varmint (1990s).

Pretty sure I bought mine from Hirsh. Trying to track down the exact model etc as that worked. I’ll take a look tonight. EGW brand if I recall.

Winchester 70 Short Action: 3.259"
Winchester 70 Long Action: 3.805"
Winchester 70 WSM: 3.514"
Winchester 70 WSSM: 3.225"

Update: Here's what I ordered from Hirsch for my 308 heavy varmint.

EGW - Base - Winchester 70 Short Action 20 MOA .

It worked perfectly. Only thing to keep in mind is that a 1.18 scope mount is slightly high with a 56mm objective and without an adjustable cheek riser. I have to find lower rings/mount for my scope in order for it to be perfect. The rail however fits perfectly.

When they introduced the WSM they opened up the ejection port and the rear screws moved back a third of an inch or so.

For a period there were New Haven 308/243 etc guns with the short spacing, and then eventually they all adopted the WSM spacing.

If you go to the EGW website they have diagrams with dimensions and refer to the newer spacing as the WSM version, even though all current short actions use the wider spacing.
