Little sad about Ruger sneaky change to the Ranch Rifle, let me explain.
2 years ago my dad and me had a little gun build challenge.
we build 223 rifles and wanted to see who could build the most inexpensive yet nice and accurate gun.
ideally under $1000 all in.
im not sure if any of you remember the thread about it.
it was a hell of a lot of fun and my dad and myself still take them out to the range whenever we get together and we try to out-shoot each other with them.
fast forward to today and the only complaint we both had about our guns was the lack of box magazines.
he built his on the Howa and i built mine on the Ruger Predator.
but just a couple weeks ago my dad went and picked up one of those after market add on's so he can now use box magazines on his Howa.
and that REALLY got me green with envy!
then i noticed that Ruger has updated the Predator and the Ranch rifles so there are now versions that come with new magwell adapters so you can use AR 10rd mags with them.
i was over the MOON!
so i got ahold of Ruger and asked them if i could add that onto my existing Predator.
Nope.
I asked them if i could buy the stock separate.
Nope.
so then i finaly settled on the option that i would just buy one of the new guns with the AR mag well and move all my stuff over to the new gun and flip the old gun to offset the cost, in the end i would loose $100-150 but for me that was worth it to be able to use the LAR mags which i have boxes of.
i even have a co-worker lined up who wants to by my predator because the gun is such a laser.
everything was looking so good.
I also decided i was going to change from the Predator platform to the Ranch platform so i could shoot 5.56 ammo instead of just 223. I know you CAN shoot 5.56 in the 223, most of the time with no issues but im silly and i try not too unless the rifle says it can, just that fear in the back of my mind of the gun going BOOM.
so i was decided, i was gonna get a Ruger Ranch in 5.56 that takes the new AR magwell adapter.
So i started working the internet and the phones last week or so.... looking for a gun store that was planning to get in the gun i wanted. Then i noticed something.....
Ruger's web site one night changed.....
the gun i wanted was no longer listed as 5.56 but 223.
i thought that was strange.
that was the whole allure of getting that model was you could shoot 5.56 and not be limited to just the 223.
so i emailed Ruger and asked if that was a type-oh or if this was indeed a change in the gun.
and here is what i got for a reply:
so there ya have it.
the new Ruger Ranch Rifle will no longer be rated for 5.56
im kinda sad, i had it all planned out.
im thinking now ill just sit on my original one and wait and see if they decide to sell the stocks separate at a later date and i can just upgrade my current rifle.
till then ill just whimper and cry like a 4 year old who cant have the newest and greatest toy.
my original build
the old man and me out playing with our toys
what i WANTED my gun to be able to do!

Thank you for contacting Ruger Customer Service.
The model #26965 is chambered for the .223 only and we cannot recommend using 5.56 in this rifle.
The older model # 6965 has the 5.56 chamber which is designed to accept 5.56 or .223.
The Predator model # 16921 is also chambered for only the .223. The model # 26944 is chambered for the .223 as well but accepts AR-style magazines. We do not offer a retrofit or upgrade so that the model # 16921 will accept the AR-style magazines.
Best Regards,
Ruger Customer Service
