Well, what better place to get some insight into a sucessful shoot than CGN.

Here's the scenario. We are hosting the 2008 provincials, and I want a bit of input on some of the smaller things that turn a good shoot into a great shoot.

As a bit of a scenario, it will be a four day shoot, throwing from 4 houses for competition and a practice trap available. All machines are Pat with Canterbury. We expect between 100-125 shooters.

SATA will be onhand for target setting and registration, with our club being responsible for squadding.

We have onsite camping facilities (32 full serviced sites) with a limited number of 30 amp sites for the big campers/motorhomes.

What else should not be overlooked??

Not a trap shooter, but I've run dozens of skeet shoots. A few things that come to mind that are probably applicable to trap;

- Water on the fields. I find bottled water is easier than jugs.

- Are you going to run a kitchen that serves any or all of Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner

- Are you going to host a shoot dinner one of the nights?

-Do you have ammo on hand for sale?

-Are you going to have any fund raiser type draws or door prizes?

-T-shirts or other gear for sale?

-Who provides scorekeepers/referees?

-Do you have a trap mechanic available and spare parts?

-Are you planning on overhaulling your traps before the shoot?

-Do you have enough targets to get you through competition and practice?

-Are you going to be open the days leading up to the shoot for practice?

-Do you have a clean up scheduled for a few days before the shoot?

There are a million little things that can be done. These were just off the top of my head.

Brad.

You might want to make sure that you have a variety of ammo avail. for purchase, ie" premium trap loads such as AA, Fed. GM, or Rem. Premier. This is the kind of thing that shooters remember as most shoots don't bother.

I thought that calcutta autions were prohibited as per the gaming laws in the Criminal Code? I know that some clubs used to try tyo get around the law and advertise a "special event" will be held prior to the handicap. Does anyone know the present status of calcutta autions?

- Water on the fields. I find bottled water is easier than jugs. Excellent point!

- Are you going to run a kitchen that serves any or all of Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner Yes, we have a full kitchen planned for Lunches, with a smokie bbq/ keg of beer for Friday night social

- Are you going to host a shoot dinner one of the nights? Yes, Roast Beef banquet on Saturday night

-Do you have ammo on hand for sale? Yes, probably Kent or Winchester Supertargets.

-Are you going to have any fund raiser type draws or door prizes? We will have lots of door prizes from our corporate sponsors

-T-shirts or other gear for sale? Possibly. Any recommendations of what are typically a good sellers?

-Who provides scorekeepers/referees? Our club has lined up the SR football team (ie grownups) to provide scorekeepers for a donation to their club. I believe officials will be provided by SATA.?

-Do you have a trap mechanic available and spare parts? We have an abundance of guys that are very knowledgable with regards to the Pat Trap.

-Are you planning on overhaulling your traps before the shoot? Yes, rebuilding a few traphouses to put on retracting roof systems for loading them full of targets in the morning.

-Do you have enough targets to get you through competition and practice? Yes

-Are you going to be open the days leading up to the shoot for practice? Possibly, depending if there are many guys show up early

-Do you have a clean up scheduled for a few days before the shoot? Cleanup is ongoing from the minute it's warm enough to start.

There are a million little things that can be done. These were just off the top of my head.

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Keep them coming!

We will have to look into this, as most of our shooters will bring their own shells. It's probably worth it to have a dozen or so flats of the good stuff in case someone needs it for a shoot off or has some soft reloads.

Are you going to hold some side pots? A calcutta auction? Annie Oakleys are always good for raising a few dollars for the club.

There may be a calcutta on Friday night after the keg of beer is gone!! As for the side events, I don't know of we will have time. We may just have to stick to the program to try to keep it simple and running as smoothly as possible. Me during the shoot ---> :runaway:
