Hi all. Been lurking here for ages, finding answers to all my questions except this one.

I recently bought some old reloading gear and included was 2-1lb. cans of Dupont 5066. I opened one and it smells like new powder. I would like to use it for either 38 Special with a 148gr semi-wadcutter or 9mm 124 gr lead round nose.

Anyone out there in CGN got some old reloading manuals?

Thanks.

Hi. Any powder with Dupont on the can is at least 35 to 40 years old or more. There's no current data available. Powder that old doesn't turn into an explosive. It just may not work.
However, a guy on another site had some 9mm jacketed data from 1969. No good for a cast bullet. I'd try 3.5 grains with a 124 grain cast bullet.
9mm P, 116 gr Norma FMJ + 4.5 gr 5066 = 1102 fps @ 30,838 psi
Another guy on yet another forum says his 148 grain HBWC .38 Special load is 2.5 grains. A guy on Handloads.org says the same thing.

Is your Herters manual for rifle powder, as well as pistol?
I have about a can of Herters 100. I used one full can of it, but never had any information on it. I thought it to be a hair faster than 4350. If you have a manual for it, would you print out some, for the 30-06, would be great.
Thanks, H4831

No problem. Here you go. I deliberately left the drawing of the '.300 Herter Ram Magnum' just as a matter of historic interest.:)

Thanks 98.
I notice in the heavier bullets in 30-06, they rate Herters 100 exactly the same as 4350.
Looking at the results in my notes of one test, I used 58 grains, with 180 bullet.
Herters 100--- 2785
IMR 4350 --- 2730
Norma 204 --- 2732.

In my short barrelled Rem 600, 308, with 165 grain Hornady.
50 grains of Herters 100 --- 2558
50.5 Norma 204 -- --- 2580
These powders are too slow for the 308 and 165 grain bullets.

With the batches of powder I had, I figured the Herters 100 as being a hair faster than 4350, as I said.
However, I didn't do too bad, considering I had no data, whatsoever, on Herters 100, when I started with it.

Thanks guys. Mauser98 those scans are terrific. This is turning into an interesting history lesson for me. I'm going to load a few rounds of 38, and give it a go.
